A New Beginning

Arthur: Goodnight, Marcus. Take good care of your firm... and your beautiful daughter.

Marcus: Goodnight, Arthur. Take care of yourself.

Marcus watched Arthur walk down the wide driveway toward his waiting sedan, the dark rain falling softly against the pavement.

He stepped back inside the warm entryway, closing and locking the heavy mahogany door before picking Lily up in a warm bear hug.

Lily: Daddy, can we bake chocolate chip cookies after the movie finishes?

Marcus: Absolutely, baby. We can bake as many cookies as you want.

They walked back into the living room, where the warm fireplace cast a soft, comfortable glow over the cozy furniture and family framed photos lining the mantelpiece.

Among the photos stood a bright picture of Marcus, his late wife, and baby Lily laughing together on a sunny beach five years ago.

Marcus set Lily down on the plush sofa, sitting down right beside her and pulling a warm fleece blanket over both their legs.

Lily: Daddy?

Marcus: Yes, sweetheart?

Lily: Are you sad that you didn't get married today?

Marcus looked down at his daughter's bright, clear eyes, feeling a profound sense of peace and relief wash over his entire chest.

Marcus: Not even a little bit, Lily. Today was the best day of my life, because I got to protect the most important person in my entire world.

Lily: Me?

Marcus: Always you, baby. You are my family, my heart, and my entire home. Nobody will ever come between us.

Lily snuggled close against his chest, resting her head against his shoulder as the movie played softly on the screen.

Outside, the rain fell steadily against the windowpane, but inside the estate, the air was warm, quiet, and filled with complete safety.

Marcus rested his chin gently against Lily's hair, knowing that his business was secure, his home was safe, and his daughter would never have to cry over a secret letter ever again.

He took a deep, contented breath, closing his eyes as he held his little girl tight, ready for a peaceful new beginning built on real love, trust, and unwavering loyalty.
