Confrontation At The Altar

Vanessa: Marcus, where are you going?! The organist is already playing the prelude music!

Marcus: Get out of my way, Vanessa.

Vanessa: You cannot walk out into the chapel looking like this! Look at your suit! Look at your daughter's face!

Marcus: I am walking out there to tell three hundred guests exactly what kind of person you truly are.

Marcus took Lily by the hand, gently wiping the remaining tears from her small cheeks before lifting her securely into his arms.

Lily: Daddy, are we going home now?

Marcus: Soon, baby. First, Daddy has to clean up a very big mess.

Vanessa grabbed Marcus's arm firmly, her manicured nails digging into the black fabric of his tuxedo sleeve.

Vanessa: Listen to me, Marcus! If you walk out those doors and ruin my wedding day, my father will call in every single loan your real estate company holds with his bank!

Marcus: Tell him to call them in. I would rather go bankrupt and sleep on a park bench with my daughter than spend one single night married to a monster like you.

Vanessa: You are making a huge mistake! My father controls the entire municipal zoning board for your downtown project!

Marcus: He can control whatever he wants. He doesn't control me, and he certainly doesn't control my child.

Marcus shoved her hand off his arm with disdain, pushing open the double doors into the grand corridor of the church.

The sounds of soft classical violin music leaked out from the main chapel, where hundreds of high-society guests in expensive suits and gowns sat waiting for the ceremony to begin.

At the front of the center aisle stood Vanessa's mother, Eleanor, dressed in a lavender designer suit, smiling brightly as she adjusted the floral arrangements near the altar.

Eleanor: Marcus! What are you doing out of your dressing room? The bridal party is supposed to be lined up in the hallway!

Marcus: Eleanor, step forward right now.

Eleanor: Marcus, darling, keep your voice down! The mayor and the governor's wife are sitting in the second row!

Marcus: I don't care if the President of the United States is sitting in the second row! Come here right now!

The murmurs throughout the sanctuary started immediately as guests turned their heads to watch the groom holding his daughter in his arms while marching toward the altar.

Guest A: Is that the groom? Why isn't he standing at the altar with his best man?

Guest B: Look at the child... she's been crying! What's going on up there?

Vanessa rushed out from the holding corridor, her heavy bridal veil trailing behind her as she tried to catch up to Marcus before he reached the microphone podium.

Vanessa: Mother, stop him! He's lost his mind!

Eleanor: Marcus, what is the meaning of this scene?! You are embarrassing our entire family in front of the press!

Marcus stood in front of the altar microphone, turning his body so that every single guest in the chapel could see the crisp white boarding school document held high in his right hand.

Marcus: Can everyone hear me clearly in the back rows?

Eleanor: Marcus, cut off that microphone this instant!

Marcus: I have a brief announcement to make before we proceed with today's celebration.

The sanctuary fell completely silent, the organist abruptly stopping his music as every eye in the room locked onto the groom.

Marcus: Ten minutes ago, I walked into my daughter's holding room and found her crying hysterically on the sofa because she was handed this acceptance letter to an overseas boarding school in Switzerland.

Gasps echoed across the crowded rows of high-society guests.

Guest C: Switzerland?! Isn't that child only eight years old?

Guest A: Why would they send her away on their wedding day?

Marcus: My fiancée, Vanessa, and her mother, Eleanor, secretly submitted an application for my daughter to be shipped away to an overseas facility right after today's reception!

Eleanor: That is an absolute lie! We were providing her with a world-class educational opportunity!

Marcus: They told my eight-year-old daughter that I didn't want her in my house anymore, simply because they thought a grieving child would ruin their prestigious family image!

Vanessa: Marcus! Stop speaking right now!

Marcus: Look at my daughter's face, Vanessa! Look at her tears! Is this the family dynamic you wanted your father's bank to finance?!
