Vanessa: You are humiliating me in front of my father's entire corporate board!
Marcus: You humiliated yourself the moment you placed a monetary value on my child's place in my life!
In the front row, Vanessa's father, Arthur, stood up from his seat, his face dark with embarrassment and fury as he looked at his wife and daughter.
Arthur: Eleanor... Vanessa... is this true? Did you apply for a residential boarding school program without Marcus's consent?
Eleanor: Arthur, please! Sit down! We can discuss our family administrative decisions in private after the service!
Arthur: Answer my question, Eleanor! Did you use our family trust fund to pay an overseas registration fee behind the groom's back?!
Vanessa: Father, it was for the good of our public image! Marcus's firm is taking on major municipal contracts, and having a traumatized child living with us would attract negative media stories about his late wife's estate!
Arthur: You absolute fools! Both of you!
Arthur stepped out of the pew, his heavy footsteps echoing across the marble aisle as he marched straight toward the altar podium.
Arthur: Marcus... I give you my personal word as a board chairman, I had no knowledge of this disgusting plan.
Marcus: I believe you, Arthur. But that doesn't change what your daughter and wife tried to pull on my family today.
Arthur: Vanessa, hand over your engagement ring right now.
Vanessa: Father! What are you saying?! This wedding is supposed to secure our real estate holdings!
Arthur: You have disgraced our family name far worse than any business venture ever could! Hand him the ring!
Vanessa: I will not! Marcus signed a legal agreement with our firm!
Marcus: Check page twelve of that legal agreement, Vanessa. Any clause regarding family merger status becomes completely null and void in the event of fraud or child endangerment.
Vanessa froze, her jaw dropping as she realized Marcus had anticipated every single move her family might make against his daughter.
Vanessa: You... you put an anti-fraud clause in our prenuptial agreement?
Marcus: My late wife's father was an estate lawyer, Vanessa. I know how people like you operate when money and status are involved.
Lily: Daddy... can we go home now? I don't like all these people staring at us.
Marcus: Yes, sweetheart. We are leaving right now.
Marcus reached into his tuxedo pocket, pulled out his own gold wedding band, and tossed it onto the pristine white silk runner on the altar floor.
Marcus: There will be no wedding today, ladies and gentlemen. Please feel free to enjoy the catering in the hall on Vanessa's tab.
The crowd erupted into chaotic whispers and shouting as Marcus turned on his heel, cradling Lily tightly against his chest while walking steadily down the center aisle.
Vanessa: Marcus! Come back here! You can't just leave me standing at the altar in front of everyone!
Marcus: Keep walking, Lily. Don't look back.
Vanessa: You're going to lose your company, Marcus! I will make sure my father destroys your firm by tomorrow morning!
Arthur: Shut your mouth, Vanessa! You won't be touching a single dollar of our firm's capital ever again!
Marcus kept moving forward, passing row after row of wealthy guests who parted like the red sea, looking at the groom with a mix of shock, awe, and deep respect.
As he reached the heavy front doors of the sanctuary, the bright afternoon sunlight poured into the hallway, illuminating his daughter's tear-stained smile.
Lily: Daddy... are we really going back to our house?
Marcus: Yes, baby. We are going back to our house, and nobody is ever going to try to take you away from me again.
Lily: I love you, Daddy.
Marcus: I love you too, sweetheart. More than every dollar in the world.
