Nine months later, the Palm Beach County Courthouse was filled with news reporters, corporate lawyers, and curious locals. The trial of Evelyn Sterling had dominated regional headlines for months.
Evelyn sat at the defense table wearing a dark blue prison jumpsuit, her hands bound by heavy steel chains attached to a leather waist belt. Her blonde hair was grey at the roots, unstyled and messy, and her face was thin and sunken.
Across the aisle sat Arthur in a dark grey suit, holding Sarah's hand tightly. Next to them sat Toby, looking healthy, happy, and fully recovered, holding a small toy airplane in his lap.
Judge Lawson: We are ready for final sentencing in the case of the State of Florida versus Evelyn Sterling.
Defense Lawyer: Your Honor, my client is an elderly woman of seventy-two years! We ask for a light sentence in a private care facility due to her declining health!
Prosecutor: Your Honor, the state points to the crystal-clear four-K video evidence played in this courtroom. The defendant showed absolute malice, striking a six-year-old child and throwing him into deep water for financial and familial control.
Judge Lawson looked down at Evelyn with deep disgust, adjusting his glasses before taking hold of his heavy wooden gavel.
Judge Lawson: The sheer coldness displayed in that video is something this court cannot ignore. You sat on a chair sipping a beverage while your own grandson fought for his life underwater.
Evelyn: Your Honor, please! I am a Sterling! I was only trying to make him strong!
Judge Lawson: True strength comes from love and protection, Miss Sterling, not abuse. For the counts of aggravated child abuse, felony assault, and endangerment, I sentence you to fifteen years in the Florida Department of Corrections without the possibility of early parole.
Evelyn: NO! FIFTEEN YEARS?! ARTHUR! SAVE ME! TELL THEM TO STOP!
The judge brought his heavy wooden gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack against the bench.
Judge Lawson: Remand the prisoner to state custody immediately.
Bailiffs grabbed Evelyn by her shoulders, dragging her kicking and screaming through the heavy side exit doors toward the holding cells below.
Arthur didn't even turn around to look at his mother as her cries faded down the corridor. He picked up Toby in his arms, kissing his forehead while Sarah wrapped her arm around his waist.
Toby: We're safe now, right Daddy?
Arthur: Yes, buddy. We're safe forever.
They walked out of the courtroom together into the bright, warm Florida sunshine, leaving the dark shadow of greed and cruelty behind them forever as they stepped into their peaceful new life.
