Justice In The Hallway

Why Was A Little Girl Hiding Under My Cabinet

Officer Ramirez: I said drop the weapon and step away from the homeowner! NOW!

Victor: Wait! You don't understand! This is a family dispute! I have custody papers!

Mark: Officer, he broke into my residence, threatened my life, and abandoned two young children inside a cabinet to extort a fifty-million-dollar estate!

Officer Ramirez: We recorded every word of your conversation on Mr. Sterling's security system, sir. Put your hands behind your head and get on your knees!

Victor slowly dropped his hand from his jacket, his face turning pale as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. The second officer forced him down onto the floor near the white cabinet door.

Victor: Mark, please! We can work out a settlement! You can have half the trust fund!

Mark: I don't want your filthy money, Victor. I want you in a state penitentiary for the rest of your miserable life.

Officer Ramirez: Where are the children, Mr. Sterling?

Mark: They're safe inside the office with my wife. And officer... we need an ambulance dispatched to 412 Elm Street. That's the medical facility where he's holding their mother, Elena.

Officer Ramirez: Units are already en route to that location based on the tip your wife gave dispatch two minutes ago. We're going to get her out.

Victor: You ruined everything, Mark! You ruined my life!

Mark: You ruined your own life the second you harmed my family.

The officers dragged Victor out through the front entrance, his curses fading into the afternoon air as police sirens wailed down the street. The office door opened slowly, and Sarah walked out carrying Lily, with Chloe clutching her skirt.

Sarah: Mark... is it over? Is he gone?

Mark: He's gone, Sarah. He's never coming back.

Lily: Daddy... did the bad man go away?

Mark: Yes, Lily. He's gone forever. And the police are bringing your mommy home right now.

Chloe ran forward, throwing her small arms around Mark's legs. Mark knelt down on the wooden floor, pulling both of his daughters into a tight, warm embrace while Sarah stood beside them, tears of relief flowing down her cheeks.

Chloe: Are we going to live in this house now, Daddy?

Mark: Yes, sweetheart. You, Lily, and your mommy are going to live right here, safe and loved, for as long as you want.

Lily: No more dark cabinets?

Mark: No more dark cabinets ever again.

Mark kissed the top of Lily's head, holding his newly discovered daughters close to his chest as the sunlight bathed the hallway in bright, beautiful warmth.
