The Secret Inside The Dark Cabinet

Why Was A Little Girl Hiding Under My Cabinet

Mark: Sarah, stay back for a second. Let me see what's in there.

Sarah: Be careful, Mark! We don't know what's inside!

Mark: It's alright, Sarah. Just hold the grocery bags and give me space.

Mark reached out his right hand, his fingers trembling slightly as he grasped the polished brass handle of the low cabinet door. The hinges creaked softly in the quiet house, revealing the deep, shadowed interior beneath the hallway shelving. Piled inside was a makeshift nest of thick fleece blankets, crumpled throw pillows, and several empty snack wrappers scattered across the wood floor.

Mark: My God... someone has been living inside here.

A sharp, terrified gasp echoed from the dark recess. Huddled in the far corner was another small child, her knees pulled tightly to her chest. She wore a stained cotton shirt, her hair messy and unbrushed, her tiny shoulders shaking with uncontrollable fear as the bright daylight flooded into her dark hideaway.

Girl inside cabinet: Please don't hurt me! Please don't lock it again!

Mark: Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you. I promise you're safe here.

Sarah: Mark, is that another child?! Oh my Lord, she's terrified!

Mark: It's okay, sweetheart. Look at me. See my hand? I'm just extending my hand to help you out.

The young girl inside the cabinet shrank back against the wooden frame, her chest heaving as she sucked in frightened gulps of air. The little girl in the white dress stepped closer, kneeling beside Mark on the floor.

Girl in white dress: It's okay, Lily. He has nice eyes. He's not the mean man.

Lily: Are you sure, Chloe? Is he going to take our food away?

Chloe: No, he let me keep the plate. Come out, Lily.

Slowly, hesitantly, the little girl named Lily uncurled her small body from the corner of the dark cabinet. She crawled forward on her hands and knees, stepping out onto the polished wooden floor into the afternoon light. Mark looked closely at her pale face, his breath catching in his throat as a strange, overwhelming feeling of familiarity washed over him.

Mark: Lily... how long have you been hiding inside that cabinet?

Lily: Since the big truck came and took the boxes away. I hid so he wouldn't find me.

Sarah: Mark, who is "he"? Who put these poor children in our house?

Mark: I don't know, Sarah... but look at her eyes. Look at her jawline.

Lily reached up with a trembling, warm hand, touching Mark's cheek with pure hesitation. Her tearful eyes searched his face, her thumb gently brushing against his jaw as tears spilled down her dusty cheeks.

Lily: Who are you?

Mark: I'm Mark... I own this house, sweetheart. Nobody is going to harm you here.

Lily: You have the same photo as the woman in the bedroom drawer...

Mark: What photo? What are you talking about?

Lily leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a fragile, tender whisper that made Mark's entire body freeze in place.

Lily: Daddy...

A sharp, dramatic shock hit Mark like a physical blow. His breath hitched, his heart hammering against his ribs as he stared at the little girl kneeling right in front of him on the hallway floor.
