Why Was A Little Girl Hiding Under My Cabinet

The quiet afternoon inside the suburban home was shattered by the faint sound of footsteps near the hallway. Mark adjusted his necktie, setting down his briefcase by the entryway after a long day at the office. He expected the house to be empty while his wife, Sarah, was out running errands, but a soft scraping sound drew his attention toward the kitchen corridor.

Mark: Sarah? Is that you back early from the grocery store?

There was no answer, only the tiny, cautious rustle of fabric against the hardwood floor. Mark took a slow step forward, his polished shoes silent against the runner rug. As he rounded the corner, he stopped dead in his tracks. A little girl, no older than four or five, stood near the wall in a clean white dress. An American flag hung quietly on the wall behind her, casting a long shadow across the hallway.

Mark: Hey there... little one? Where did you come from?

The little girl didn't speak. She held a small white porcelain plate in her tiny hands, balancing a few crustless finger sandwiches. Her dark eyes were wide, darting toward the front door before locking onto Mark with an expression of intense caution. She carefully knelt down, setting the small plate onto the floor right against a white wooden cabinet door beneath the linen closet.

Mark: What are you doing with that plate on the floor?

Girl: It's for the quiet time. She needs to eat her dinner now.

Mark: Who needs to eat dinner? Sweetheart, who brought you into my house?

Before the girl could answer, the front door swung open again, and Sarah walked into the hallway carrying two heavy grocery bags. She froze the instant she saw Mark kneeling in the corridor near the tiny girl in the white dress.

Sarah: Mark! What is going on? Who is this child?

Mark: I don't know, Sarah! I just walked in and found her setting food on the floor!

Sarah: Oh my goodness... Mark, look at the cabinet door! It's unlatched!

Mark turned his head back toward the small white cabinet door resting just inches from the plate of finger sandwiches. A tiny, trembling hand suddenly reached out from the narrow crack, and Mark realized with a cold shudder that the real mystery was hiding inside the dark walls of his own home.
