The Secret in the Vault

When My Stepmother Cut My Pearls I Found Truth

Jack helped Victoria sit up on the smooth wooden floor.

The grand entry room was silent except for their heavy breathing.

Victoria looked down at the loose pearls scattered near her shoes.

She picked up one small pearl and held it tightly.

"My father promised me the trust fund before he passed," she said.

Jack stood up and pulled Victoria safely behind his back.

He looked up at Eleanor, who was still standing above.

"You took advantage of a sick man," Jack yelled up to Eleanor.

Eleanor laughed coldly and turned away toward her private office.

"Call the police if you want, Jack," Eleanor shouted back.

"The legal will names me as the sole heir now."

Jack took Victoria by the hand and led her away.

They walked quickly down the long back hallway of the mansion.

They entered the private library where her father used to work.

Jack closed the thick double doors and locked them tight.

"We need to find the original documents right now," Jack stated.

Victoria wiped her face and walked toward the large painting.

Behind the painted landscape was an old metal wall safe.

"My father showed me the combination last year," Victoria whispered.

She turned the heavy dial carefully until the latch clicked open.

Inside the safe lay a stack of thick legal envelopes.

Victoria pulled out the papers with trembling hands.

Jack stood guard near the door, listening for footsteps.

"Is the life insurance policy in there?" Jack asked quietly.

Victoria scanned the top page under the desk lamp light.

"This is not just a standard inheritance document," she murmured.

She pointed a shaking finger at a red seal.

"My father filed a lawsuit against Eleanor before he died."

Jack walked over and looked closely at the stamped pages.

"She was draining the company accounts for months," Jack noted.

Victoria realized why Eleanor had pushed her off the balcony.

Eleanor was desperate to hide her illegal financial crimes.

Suddenly, the brass door handle began to turn slowly.

Someone was keying open the lock from the outside hallway.
