The Frame On The Wall

The Stepmother Dropped My Daughter Off The Balcony On Purpose

Victoria: Go ahead, send the maid away! It doesn't change the fact that you have no proof of what happened on that upper balcony landing!

Julian: You always underestimate me, Victoria. You always thought you were the smartest person in Palm Beach.

Victoria: I am the smartest person in this room! I came into this marriage with a plan, and you were blind enough to sign every document I placed on your desk!

Julian: Except for one very important security detail that you never noticed.

Victoria: What detail? Stop playing games with me, Julian!

Julian: My late wife's security system. She never trusted your family, even back when our companies were just business partners.

Victoria: Sarah was paranoid! She was always looking over her shoulder!

Julian: Sarah was smart. She knew what kind of cold, calculating woman you were long before I finally opened my eyes.

Victoria: It doesn't matter what Sarah thought! She is six feet under, and I am the legal lady of this mansion!

Julian: Not for another ten minutes, Victoria.

Victoria: What is that supposed to mean?

Julian: Look up at the balcony wall behind you. What do you see?

Victoria turned her head slowly, looking up toward the second-floor landing where she had held Lily over the edge. A large framed American flag hung on the wall directly behind the wooden rail.

Victoria: A framed flag. So what? It's just a tacky piece of wall decor your late wife put up.

Julian: Built directly into the dark wooden molding of that frame is a motion-activated, high-definition camera with a crystal-clear microphone.

Victoria's entire face drained of color in an instant. Her jaw dropped open as she stared up at the wooden frame.

Victoria: You... you're lying! That's just a regular wooden frame!

Julian: It records directly to an off-site private cloud server that only I and my security director can access. Every single inch of this foyer and balcony is recorded twenty-four hours a day in four-K quality.

Julian pulled his smartphone out of his beige suit pocket, tapping the glass screen twice before holding the display up toward her face.

Julian: Would you like to watch the video with me, Victoria? It catches you dragging Lily by her arms to the rail. It catches you lifting her over the edge. And it catches you opening your hands while telling her to say goodbye.

Victoria: No... turn it off! Give me that phone right now!

Victoria lunged forward like a wild animal, reaching her long manicured nails out to snatch the phone out of his hand.

Julian: Don't you dare lay a finger on me!

Julian stepped back smoothly, dodging her desperate attack with ease. Victoria stumbled forward, her high heels slipping on the polished marble before she caught herself against the arm of the leather couch.

Victoria: Give me the phone, Julian! We can work this out!

Julian: Work what out?! You tried to murder my three-year-old child!

Victoria: I was desperate, Julian! My father's shipping company is bankrupt! We owe millions of dollars to loan sharks in Miami!

Julian: And you thought dropping my daughter off a balcony was the solution to your family's debt?!

Victoria: I wasn't going to kill her! I just wanted her injured enough so you would place her in a full-time care facility! I wanted her out of this house so you would focus on me!

Julian: You dropped her twenty feet onto stone! If Elena hadn't caught her, my baby would be dead right now!

Victoria: Julian, please! Delete that video clip right now and I will sign the divorce papers today! I'll waive all spousal support, I'll pack my bags, and I'll leave Florida forever!

Julian: Delete the clip? Victoria, that clip is going to lock you in a state prison for the rest of your natural life.

Loud police sirens suddenly blared down the private driveway outside, red and blue lights flashing through the tall glass windows of the grand entrance.

Victoria: You called the police before you even walked through the door?!

Julian: I called them the exact second I got the motion alert on my phone while driving home from the office. I saw what you were doing on the live video feed while I was ten minutes away.

Victoria: You set me up!

Julian: You set yourself up, Victoria. Your evil greed made you sloppy, and now you are going to pay for every single second of terror you caused my daughter.
