By midnight, the grand banquet hall was completely empty and quiet.
The catering staff had cleaned up the broken glass and spilled wine.
Arthur sat on the stage steps with a cup of warm tea.
Sarah walked over with her coat on, ready to head home.
"Thank you again, Sarah," Arthur said, standing up to meet her.
"You saved my life and saved my father's hard-earned business today."
"I was just doing my job, sir," Sarah replied with a smile.
"Your father was a good man, and so are you, Arthur."
Arthur pulled a key from his pocket and held it out.
It was the key to his father's old private office downtown.
"I want you to manage my entire estate starting tomorrow," Arthur said.
"No more cleaning floors or taking orders from cruel people here."
"You will have a full salary and a real house of your own."
Sarah looked at the key with wide, disbelieving eyes in shock.
"Sir, I cannot accept such a large gift from you," she said.
"You earned it by showing true loyalty when everyone else lied," Arthur replied.
Sarah took the key softly and wiped a happy tear from her face.
She hugged Arthur gently before turning to walk out the front doors.
Arthur looked up at the large American flag hanging on the wall.
He felt a deep sense of relief settle over his tired heart.
He had lost a dishonest bride, but he had gained true clarity.
The truth had been painful, but it had set him completely free.
He walked out into the cool night air with his head held high.
A bright new chapter of his life was finally ready to begin.
