Unlocking The Wall Safe

Clara: Get out of my father's library!

Clara burst into the high-ceilinged room, her heavy wedding dress trailing behind her as she tried to block the path to the fireplace. But David pushed past her easily, stepping up to the large oil painting hanging above the mantle.

David: Swing the frame, Sarah.

Sarah pulled the heavy gold frame open, revealing a black steel wall safe embedded in the brickwork. She looked at the silver pocket watch in her hand, reading the small numbers stamped near the rim.

Sarah: Fourteen... thirty-two... eighty-nine.

David turned the steel dial, the mechanism clicking sharply three times. With a heavy metallic thud, the thick safe door swung outward.

Eleanor: Don't touch those files! That is private family documentation!

David: Step back, Eleanor, before I have the police arrest you for physical assault on my sister!

Inside the safe lay a thick leather binder stamped with a red state seal, along with a sealed manila envelope labeled: To David and Sarah Vance — The True Will of Arthur Vance.

Sarah: He kept it... He kept the original testament!

David: Look at the date on this stamp, Eleanor. This was notarized three days before my father passed away.

Clara: That will was revoked by the probate court twenty years ago!

David: It was revoked because your mother presented a forged codicil stating Arthur Vance had no living heirs!

David unsealed the manila envelope, pulling out four pages of thick cream paper. His eyes scanned down the first page, his face hardening as he read the lines aloud.

David: "I, Arthur Vance, leave seventy percent of Vance Logistics, the Sterling estate mansion, and all liquid trust funds to my biological children, David Vance and Sarah Vance..."

Eleanor: That paper is a fake! Sarah printed that out in the servant quarters!

David: It has the official watermark of the state supreme court, Eleanor. You can't fake paper like this.

Sarah: She didn't just forge the will, David. Look at the secondary ledger in the bottom of the safe.

David reached back into the steel compartment, pulling out a small black ledger filled with handwritten wire transfer codes.

David: What are these transactions?

Sarah: Those are the monthly offshore payments Eleanor made to Dr. Reynolds to keep our father heavily sedated during his final months.

Eleanor: You... you found the medical ledger?

Eleanor stumbled backward, her hand clutching her gold embroidered gown as her face turned deathly pale.

Clara: Mother... what is she talking about? What medical ledger?

David: Your mother didn't just steal a company, Clara. She poisoned my father so he couldn't speak to his attorneys!

Eleanor: That's a lie! I gave him his prescribed medication!

David: The toxicology records are attached right here on page twelve, Eleanor. Signed by the hospital forensic chief.

The heavy footsteps of several police officers echoed down the library corridor. Detective Vance pushed through the doorway, accompanied by two uniformed officers.

Detective Vance: Police! Nobody move!

Clara: Detective! Thank God you're here! Arrest this maid for breaking into our private safe!

Detective Vance: Miss Clara, we aren't here for the maid. We received a federal warrant for Eleanor Sterling based on the wire fraud investigation.

Eleanor: A federal warrant? On what grounds?!

Detective Vance: On the grounds of grand forgery, corporate embezzlement, and first-degree murder by toxic administration.

The entire library fell dead silent as the cold reality hit Clara and her mother like a physical blow.
