As the weeks went on, the atmosphere inside the Blackwood home grew darker. Mark was working long hours at his office town hall, preparing for a major business deal that involved his family trust fund and massive company stock options. Victoria spent her time ordering expensive items on her credit cards and complaining whenever Mark spent time with his son. One afternoon, while Sarah was polishing the high railing on the second floor balcony, she heard voices coming from Victoria's private dressing room down the hall. The door was slightly open, and Victoria's loud, angry tone bounced off the walls.
Victoria: He is leaving everything to that stupid boy in his new will!
Man on phone: Are you sure about that, Victoria?
Victoria: I read the lawyer documents on his desk yesterday! If Mark dies, the entire inheritance, the mansion, and the trust fund go directly to Leo. I get nothing but a small allowance!
Man on phone: What are you going to do about it?
Victoria: I will make sure Mark sees that the boy is weak and clumsy. Or better yet, I will make Mark hate him so much that he changes the estate papers before the end of the month.
Sarah pulled back into the shadows, her breath catching in her throat. Her heart pounded heavily against her chest. She couldn't believe what she had just heard with her own ears. Victoria was not just a mean stepmother; she was actively plotting against a helpless child for millions of dollars in wealth. Sarah wanted to run straight to Mark and tell him what his wife had said on the phone, but she knew she had no physical proof. Mark respected his wife and barely knew Sarah yet. If Sarah made an accusation like that without evidence, Victoria would simply call her a liar and fire her on the spot, leaving little Leo completely unprotected in the house.
That night, Sarah stayed awake in her small maid quarters on the ground floor. She wrote down every detail of what she had heard in a small notebook, including the time and date. She promised herself that she would watch Victoria like a hawk. The next morning, Mark left early for a court hearing regarding a custody and property matter in the city. The mansion felt eerily quiet as the sun rose bright over the manicured lawn outside. Light poured through the large glass windows into the grand foyer, where the American flag hung still against the tall white wall.
Around noon, little Leo wandered down the hallway wearing his off-white suit. He had dropped his favorite small toy car near the center of the grand marble floor. Sarah was coming out of the kitchen with a tray of fresh linen when she saw Victoria step out of the side hallway. Victoria had on a bright, striking red gown that rustled against the floor. When she saw the toddler sitting near the rug, her eyes narrowed with pure hatred. She walked up behind the boy without making a sound. Sarah stopped in her tracks behind the archway, holding her breath to see what the evil woman was going to do next.
Victoria: Get up, you miserable little brat!
Leo: Mommy... no...
Victoria: Don't you call me that! You are ruined, just like your pathetic mother was!
Victoria grabbed the tiny boy by his arm, yanking him up off the ground with violent force. Leo let out a terrified cry as his small toy car clattered across the hard marble floor. Sarah felt a surge of rage boil up inside her chest. She set the linen tray down on a side table and prepared to step out into the grand hall, knowing that the time for silence was finally over.
