Sarah adjusted her plain brown coat as she stood outside the massive gates of Blackwood Manor. The mansion was bigger than any house she had ever seen in her life. Huge stone pillars held up the front porch, and bright glass windows stared out over green lawns. She had taken the job as a live-in maid because she needed the money to support her sick mother. The pay was twice what other families offered, but Sarah had heard strange rumors about the house before she arrived. People in town said that Mark Blackwood, the young billionaire owner, was a cold man who rarely smiled. He had lost his first wife two years ago in a tragic accident, leaving him alone with his baby boy named Leo. A year later, Mark married Victoria, a beautiful woman from high society who wore red dresses and expensive jewelry.
Sarah took a deep breath, walked up the stone steps, and knocked on the heavy wooden front door. A butler opened it and showed her into the main foyer. The room had gleaming white marble floors and tall white walls. A large American flag hung proudly on one side of the hall, near the grand winding staircase. Sarah stood quietly, holding her small suitcase, until footsteps sounded on the stairs. Victoria walked down slowly, her bright red gown trailing behind her. Her dark eyes swept over Sarah with cold disgust from head to toe.
Victoria: So you are the new housemaid.
Sarah: Yes, ma'am. My name is Sarah.
Victoria: I do not care what your name is. You keep your head down and keep this house spotless.
Sarah: Yes, ma'am. I understand.
Victoria: And stay away from my stepson. He has nurses and family. You are just staff here.
Sarah nodded politely, though something in the woman's cold voice made her feel uneasy. Victoria turned her back and walked away toward the large private offices on the first floor. A moment later, a quiet whimper came from near the staircase. Sarah looked over and saw a little boy, no older than two years old, sitting on the bottom step. He wore a neat little off-white suit, but his eyes were wide and filled with fear. This was tiny Leo, the heir to the entire Blackwood estate and vast fortune. Sarah felt an instant wave of warmth in her heart for the quiet child. She smiled gently at him, but before she could step forward, Victoria's sharp voice cut through the air from down the hallway, ordering the maid to get to work immediately in the kitchen.
During her first few days at Blackwood Manor, Sarah observed everything silently while scrubbing floors and dusting furniture. Mark Blackwood was almost always busy in his home office, dealing with his business empire, corporate mergers, and legal settlements. When Mark was in the room, Victoria acted like the sweetest stepmother in the world. She would pick up little Leo, smile warmly, and kiss his forehead in front of her rich husband. Mark would smile with relief, believing his young son had a loving mother figure in his life after his birth mother died. But as soon as Mark left the house for his boardroom meetings, Victoria's fake smile disappeared instantly into a cold glare. She ignored the child for hours, leaving him locked in his room with only toys for company while she talked on her phone about money, luxury cars, and designer clothing.
Sarah tried to stay out of trouble, but her heart hurt every time she saw little Leo wandering the halls alone. The toddler was terrified of Victoria's harsh voice. Whenever Victoria walked into a room, Leo would hide behind curtains or under tables, trembling silently. Sarah started leaving small wooden toys and fresh fruits near the boy's bedroom door when no one was looking. The toddler slowly began to trust the kind girl in the brown coat. He would smile softly whenever he saw Sarah cleaning nearby. But Sarah knew that something far more sinister was hiding under the surface of this wealthy home, and she kept her eyes open for any sign of real danger to the boy.
