The Secret in the Study

Julian: Are you hurt? Talk to me, Clara!

Clara: The baby... I think the baby is okay, but I was so scared!

Julian: Keep resting against me. Don't try to stand up yet.

Julian gently cupped his wife's face, his fingers shaking as he wiped away the fresh tears on her pale cheeks.

Clara: She pushed me, Julian. She actually pushed me!

Julian: I saw her. I saw what she did from the staircase doors.

He pulled Clara closer into his arms, feeling her body shudder with deep, heavy gasps of air.

Up on the second-floor balcony, Evelyn smoothed down her designer dress and attempted to compose her rattled expression.

Evelyn: Don't be ridiculous, Julian! She lost her footing near the railing!

Julian: Shut your mouth! I saw your hands on her shoulders!

Evelyn: I was trying to grab her clothes to save her from falling!

Clara: She's lying! She wanted to kill me because of these documents!

Clara raised her crumpled right hand, still tightly gripping the legal papers she had held onto during the terrifying plummet.

Julian: What documents are those?

Clara: They were hidden inside her locked desk in the West Wing study.

Evelyn: Those are private family estate papers, Clara! You had no right breaking into my private rooms!

Julian: Hand them to me, Clara.

Julian carefully took the papers from her fingers while keeping his other arm wrapped securely around her waist.

He scanned the legal letterhead at the top of the first page, his brow furrowing as he read the heavy legal terms.

Julian: This is a financial transfer agreement... from my father's life insurance payout.

Evelyn: Julian, put those down. We can talk about family finances privately in my office like adults.

Julian: Why is my name crossed off as the primary beneficiary on my father's trust fund?

Clara: Look at the second page, Julian. Look at the forged signatures on the bottom line.

Evelyn: You know nothing about your father's estate, Clara! You're just a gold-digger trying to tear this family apart!

Julian: She isn't the one who forged my signature on a three million dollar transfer form!

The heavy oak front doors opened as two estate security guards hurried into the foyer, alerted by the commotion.

Guard: Mr. Sterling, we heard shouting from outside. Is everyone okay?

Julian: Seal the front gates immediately. Nobody leaves this property until the police arrive.

Evelyn: You can't order my staff around in my own home, Julian!

Julian: This isn't your home anymore, Evelyn. It belongs to the estate fund that you've been robbing for years.

Evelyn: I am your mother! You will show me proper respect!

Julian: Respect? You just tried to murder my wife and unborn child to cover up your financial crimes!

Clara: Julian, my stomach... it hurts a little.

Julian: Guards, call an ambulance right now! Tell them a pregnant woman was involved in a fall!

Guard: Right away, sir!

Julian lifted Clara carefully off the marble floor, carrying her over to the leather sofa in the main reception room.

Julian: Hang on, sweetie. The paramedics will be here in just a few minutes.

Clara: Don't let her touch those papers, Julian. Don't let her destroy them.

Julian: Nobody is touching these except my divorce lawyer and the district attorney.
