The bright afternoon sun filtered into the high-ceilinged living room of the Dallas mansion, casting long beams across the polished wooden floors and bright wood-paneled walls. Against the main wall hung a large United States flag, its bold stars and stripes framed by dark mahogany. Armed security guards stood silently near the heavy oak doors, their eyes scanning the room. Maya, a fair-skinned maid wearing a classic black and white uniform, was on her knees cleaning the floor with a heavy vacuum cleaner.
Maya: "Excuse me, Mr. Vance... there's something stuck near the edge of the rug."
Julian: "Just move the rug aside, Maya. I need the floors finished before the guests arrive."
Maya switched off the vacuum cleaner, the loud motor humming down into complete silence. She pushed back the fringe of the antique rug, her eyes widening as she noticed a faint seam running along the wooden floorboards. A tiny scrap of dirt-stained white fabric was peeking out from a narrow hidden floor compartment.
Maya: "Boss, this veil is coming out of the floor!"
Julian: "What are you talking about? There's nothing under those boards."
Maya: "Look at this... it's a piece of lace fabric."
Maya leaned lower, taking the delicate white fabric into her hands and pulling it gently. The lace slid out slightly from the dark seam, revealing intricate embroidery that looked instantly familiar. Julian dropped his leather folder onto the glass coffee table and rushed over, his unbuttoned white shirt fluttering as he dropped to his knees beside her.
Julian: "Let me see that..."
Maya: "It looks like a wedding veil, sir."
Julian: "This was Evelyn's..."
Julian's face hardened with intense shock and realization as he stared at the lace. Both he and Maya knelt together on the cold wooden floor, tugging at the white veil to see where it led. Suddenly, the lace tightened in their grip as a dirt-covered hand reached up from beneath the hidden compartment, gripping the fabric tightly from below.
Evelyn: "Help... please..."
Julian: "Evelyn?! Oh my God!"
Eleanor: "Evelyn ran away, you know that!"
Julian ignored his grandmother's sharp voice, prying open the secret floor latch with all his strength. As the heavy wooden hatch swung open, he gasped in absolute horror. Trapped inside the narrow, dark compartment was his missing wife, her face covered in dirt and scratches, wearing a tattered white dress. She looked up with desperate, tear-filled eyes, grabbing Julian's trembling hands as he reached down to pull her from the dark pit that had kept her hidden for two years.
