The Security Audit

Evelyn unclasped her diamond bracelet and ring, slamming them onto the wooden dresser with a loud clatter.

She grabbed her single suitcase and stormed out of the master suite, her designer heels clicking angrily against the floorboards.

Mark walked back to the kitchen, holding Clara's gold locket safely in his hand.

Maya was sitting at the table, coloring a picture of a rainbow with her box of crayons.

Mark: Look what I found, Maya.

Maya: Mommy's necklace! You found it, Daddy!

Mark leaned down, fastening the delicate gold chain around Maya's neck and closing the clasp securely.

Maya held the oval locket in her small palm, opening the latch to look at the tiny photograph of her late mother smiling inside.

Maya: Mommy looks so pretty here.

Mark: She loved you more than anything in the world, Maya. And she would be so proud of how brave you were today.

Maya: Is Evelyn gone forever now?

Mark: She is gone forever, sweetie. She will never enter this house again.

A knock sounded at the kitchen doorway, and Mark's corporate lawyer, Arthur Miller, walked into the room carrying a black briefcase.

Arthur: Good morning, Mark. Sam called me ten minutes ago about the emergency situation.

Mark: Thanks for coming over so quickly, Arthur. I need the divorce papers drafted immediately.

Arthur: I already have the prenuptial agreement pulled up on my tablet. Is the child safe?

Mark: Maya is fine now. But I need you to review all security camera footage from the past three weeks.

Arthur: Why three weeks?

Mark: That's when I started traveling to Houston for the new logistics expansion. I want to know every single thing Evelyn did while I was out of town.

Arthur: Understood. My paralegal can review the server archives by this afternoon.

Maya: Mr. Lawyer, can I have a pancake too?

Arthur smiled warmly, placing his briefcase on a side chair.

Arthur: I would love a pancake, Maya. If your dad is making his famous chocolate chip recipe!

Mark: Chocolate chip pancakes coming right up for everyone!

Mark pulled out a clean stainless steel mixing bowl, pouring fresh flour and milk inside while Maya laughed happily at the table.

For the first time in three months, the luxury mansion felt warm, peaceful, and safe again.

An hour later, Arthur sat at the kitchen counter with his laptop open, reviewing the downloaded camera footage from the security server.

His eyebrows furrowed as he scrubbed through the timeline from the previous Tuesday afternoon.

Arthur: Mark, you need to take a look at this clip right now.

Mark: What did you find, Arthur?

Arthur: It's not just about how she treated Maya. Look at who Evelyn brought into your home while you were in Houston.
