Sarah slipped behind the giant wheel of the transport truck to stay out of view.
She needed to stay completely hidden until her father's aircraft arrived at the airfield.
Captain Miller had controlled this local supply depot with fear for nearly two full years.
He believed that junior enlisted soldiers were far too terrified to ever speak against him.
Most young soldiers simply signed the papers and looked the other way to avoid trouble.
Sarah had only been transferred to this specific logistics unit three short weeks ago.
She had immediately noticed severe accounting errors and missing safety certifications in the logs.
When she asked simple questions, the response was immediate hostility from the top officers.
Miller had tried bribing her first with promises of quick military career promotions.
When bribery failed completely, he turned to open intimidation on the flight line today.
Sarah checked her watch as the bright sun beat down on the open tarmac.
Her father was a decorated four star general in charge of military inspector operations.
She had never used her family name to get special treatment in her career.
In fact, almost nobody on this remote base even knew who her father was.
She had enlisted under her mother's maiden name to earn everything on her own.
She wanted to serve her country honorably without riding on anyone else's coat tails.
Now, however, corrupt officers were putting innocent young lives in real danger for profit.
Miller was cutting corners on truck maintenance to pad his department budget reports.
If a brake system failed on a steep mountain pass, soldiers could die.
Sarah looked at the dark oil leaking under the truck right in front of her.
This was not just about officer disrespect; it was about protecting her fellow soldiers.
A distant roar began to echo across the blue sky above the military base.
Sarah looked up and saw a massive C-17 transport plane descending toward the runway.
The gray aircraft shimmered dramatically in the bright daylight as it lined up perfectly.
General Vance was coming to ensure that justice was served quickly and without bias.
Sarah adjusted her cap and prepared herself for the heavy storm that was coming.
