The sound of approaching police sirens echoed through the quiet suburban streets of River Oaks. Mark's eyes darted wildly toward the front doors, calculating his options like a trapped animal.
Mark: This is crazy! I'm leaving right now!
Eleanor: I wouldn't recommend that, Mark. Escaping before the police enter will only add a felony charge to your arrest warrant.
Mark: Clara, please talk to me! We can fix this! We can go to counseling!
Clara: Do not speak my name ever again.
Mark: You're throwing away five years of marriage over one bad argument!
Clara: It wasn't one argument, Mark! You've been controlling me, hurting me, and taking my money since the day we said I do!
Eleanor: And today was the last day you ever lay a finger on my daughter.
Mark backed away from the table, his knees trembling under his suit pants. The heavy front doors of the mansion were shaken by a loud, firm knock that echoed down the wide hallway.
Officer: Police department! Open the door!
Eleanor raised her voice, keeping her cool tone calm and clear so the officer could hear her.
Eleanor: The door is unlocked! Please come into the main dining room!
The heavy doors swung open, and three armed police officers stepped into the foyer with flashlights drawn, their boots clicking against the polished marble floor.
Officer: Is everyone alright in here?
Eleanor: Officers, I am the homeowner, Eleanor Vance. My daughter was physically assaulted by her husband, Mark. The line is still open on my phone.
Mark: Officer, listen to me! This is a complete misunderstanding! My mother-in-law is lying!
Operator: Officer, this is dispatch. We have audio recording of the suspect threatening the victim and forcing physical compliance.
The lead officer stepped toward Mark, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
Officer: Turn around, sir. Put your hands behind your back.
Mark: You can't touch me! Do you know who my lawyers are?!
Officer: Put your hands behind your back right now or you will be charged with resisting arrest!
Mark attempted to pull away, but the second officer grabbed his arms swiftly, forcing him to face the wall. The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed off the grand chandelier.
