The Mask Falls Off

A Mother Secretly Called The Police During A Family Dinner

The realization of what had just happened settled like lead in Mark's stomach. He looked around the pristine dining room, where every luxurious chair and marble fixture now felt like a cage closing in around him.

Mark: Eleanor, think about what this will do to our reputation! The papers will have a field day!

Eleanor: My reputation can survive a legal scandal, Mark. Your career cannot.

Mark: Clara, tell her to cancel the police! Tell them it was a mistake!

Clara: No... no more lies, Mark.

Mark: Clara, look at me! I love you! I was just stressed about the mortgage and the estate taxes!

Clara: You laid your hands on me! You've been threatening me for months!

Mark: It was a mistake! I lost my temper!

Eleanor: You didn't lose your temper, Mark. You showed your true colors, just like you've been doing behind closed doors.

Eleanor stepped around the long table, placing a protective hand on Clara's trembling shoulder. Clara reached up and held her mother's hand tightly, feeling safe for the first time in years. Mark took a step forward, but Eleanor raised her arm, pointing her finger directly at his chest.

Eleanor: Stay right where you are. If you take another step toward my daughter, I will ensure the police charge you with felony assault.

Mark: You think you're so smart, don't you? You sat there smiling while I was talking to her! You baited me!

Eleanor: I sat there letting you record your own confession on my security system and on this open line.

Mark: What security system?

Eleanor: The four high-definition cameras in this dining hall, Mark. Every word, every grab, every threat was recorded in full digital audio and video.

Mark's eyes darted toward the corners of the ceiling, spotting the tiny red lights flickering on the camera lenses. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead. He realized then that Eleanor's passive smile wasn't submission—it was the trap setting off.

Mark: You... you tricked me.

Eleanor: You tricked yourself by thinking a fortune made you untouchable.

Clara: I'm filing for divorce tomorrow, Mark. And I'm getting a restraining order.

Mark: You won't get a dime! I'll fight you in court until you're completely broke!

Eleanor: With what money, Mark? The money you stole from her trust fund? The grand jury will freeze all your personal accounts before the end of the week.

Outside the mansion, distant red and blue lights began flashing through the sheer white curtains of the dining room windows.
