Mark turned his focus back to Clara, feeling entirely victorious. He grabbed her shoulder with force, pulling her upright in the chair as if she were a wooden doll. Clara winced, hiding her tear-streaked face from her mother.
Mark: Don't try to stop me now, Eleanor. You said it yourself—a husband has to teach his wife.
Eleanor: I did say that, didn't I?
Mark: So let me handle my wife!
Clara: Mom, please help me...
Mark: Shut up, Clara!
Eleanor stood up abruptly from her chair, the silk of her dress rustling against the dark wood. She pulled her phone from near her plate and tapped the screen with practiced ease. The room was silent except for the heavy breathing of Mark and the quiet weeping of Clara.
Mark: What are you doing, Eleanor?
Eleanor: Take your hands off my daughter.
Mark: Excuse me?
Eleanor: Take your hands off my daughter right now.
Mark froze, catching the absolute ice in Eleanor's voice. He looked at her in confusion, his fingers still tangled in Clara's hair.
Eleanor held her phone out in front of her, pushing the speaker button so the audio amplified across the high ceilings of the dining hall.
Operator: 911, what is your emergency?
Mark: What the hell is this?
Eleanor: My son-in-law is assaulting my daughter.
Operator: Ma'am, stay on the line. Are you in immediate danger?
Eleanor: He is physically gripping her head, threatening her, and trying to force her to transfer funds under distress.
Operator: Officers are dispatched to your location now. What is your address?
Eleanor: Seven hundred Oakridge Drive, River Oaks. Please send the police immediately.
Mark: Are you insane?! Hang that up right now!
Mark instantly dropped his hand from Clara's head, stepping back as if the phone itself had burned him. Clara slumped forward onto the table, gasping for breath and rubbing her sore scalp. Mark's face turned completely pale, his previous arrogance instantly vanishing into pure panic.
Mark: Eleanor, turn that off! We can talk about this!
Eleanor: I am speaking to the dispatcher, Mark. Do not step any closer to me.
Operator: Ma'am, is the suspect still in the room?
Eleanor: Yes, he is standing right in front of us. He is aggressive and dangerous.
Mark: I was just arguing with my wife! It's a private family matter!
Operator: Sir, step away from the victim. Ma'am, officers are two minutes away.
Eleanor: Thank you, operator. I am keeping the call active until they arrive.
Mark stared at Eleanor in utter disbelief, his heart pounding against his ribs. The powerful, wealthy facade he had maintained for years was collapsing around him in a matter of seconds. He looked down at Clara, who was staring up at her mother with wide, tear-filled eyes.
Mark: You set me up... you did this on purpose!
Eleanor: Now everyone has seen who you really are.
Mark took a frantic step toward Eleanor, but the emergency call remained active, transmitting every breath and movement across the open line.
