The crystal chandelier in the grand Texas dining room cast a harsh, bright light over the mahogany table. Fine china and silver cutlery sat untouched beside half-empty wine glasses. Eleanor sat rigidly at the head of the table in her designer silk dress, her eyes cold as she observed her family. Her daughter, Clara, sat across from her, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as her hands shook against her napkin. Standing over Clara was her husband, Mark, his knuckles white and his face flushed with unbridled rage.
Mark reached out with a heavy hand, aggressively grabbing Clara by the back of her head, forcing her face downward toward the table while whispering venomously into her ear. Clara let out a muffled sob, her fingers clutching the tablecloth as she tried to pull away from his crushing grip. On the wall behind them, framed artwork hung silently above the escalating violence.
Mark: Look at you, crying like a child because you can't handle the truth!
Clara: I didn't do anything wrong, Mark! You're twisting everything!
Mark: I told you to keep your mouth shut about our finances!
Clara: It's my trust fund! I have every right to know where the money went!
Mark: That money belongs to our family, which means I decide what happens to it!
Mark tightened his fingers in Clara's hair, forcing a sharp cry of pain from her lips. Clara gasped for air, her tears dripping onto the pristine white cloth. She looked across the table at her mother, praying for a single sign of support, but Eleanor merely lifted her wine glass and took a slow sip.
Clara: Mom, please... tell him to stop!
Eleanor: You brought this on yourself, Clara. You know how Mark gets when you question his authority.
Mark: Exactly. Your mother has common sense. You should try having some.
Clara: He stole from my account, Mom! Hundreds of thousands of dollars!
Mark: It was an investment! An investment in our future estate!
Clara: You transferred it to your personal account without telling me!
Mark: Because you don't know the first thing about managing wealth!
Mark leaned down closer, his breath hot against Clara's ear as he glared at her with pure malice. Clara's body trembled as she tried to shift her chair back, but Mark held her pinned in place. He felt completely in control of the situation.
Mark: You are going to sit here, keep quiet, and sign the transfer documents tonight.
Clara: No... I won't do it.
Mark: What did you just say to me?
Clara: I said no, Mark!
Mark: You don't have a choice! You're my wife, and you'll do what I say!
Eleanor: Mark, you really should calm down before the servants hear you.
Mark: I don't care who hears me! This is my house now!
Clara: It's my family's house! My parents bought this mansion!
Mark: And I run it now! You gave up control the day you married me!
Mark shook Clara's head violently, causing her glass of water to spill across the polished wood. Clara covered her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably as the humiliation crushed her spirit. Mark let out a harsh laugh, satisfied with her terror. He believed he was completely invincible inside the walls of the luxury Texas home. He believed Eleanor was on his side, watching in approval as he asserted his dominance over her daughter.
Mark: Now, are you going to behave, or do I need to make this worse for you?
Clara: Please... just let me go to my room...
Mark: Not until you apologize to me and your mother.
Clara: I'm... I'm sorry...
Mark: Louder! Say it like you mean it!
Eleanor: That's enough, Mark.
Mark: No, Eleanor, she needs to learn a lesson once and for all!
Eleanor: I said, that is enough.
Eleanor placed her wine glass back onto the table with a soft clink. Her cold, distant expression suddenly shifted into something sharp and icy. Mark chuckled, assuming she was just annoyed by the noise, but he didn't notice Eleanor's fingers sliding across the glass surface of her smartphone under the table.
