The Police Investigation

Officer Miller: Clara Vance? As in Vance Logistics and Real Estate Holdings?

Clara: Yes, officer. My late husband founded the company, and I am the primary trustee of the estate.

Davenport's face suddenly went pale, his jaw dropping as he stared at Clara in complete disbelief.

Davenport: Vance Holdings? You're... you're Clara Vance?

Clara: Surprised, Mr. Davenport? Did you think a woman taking her daughter out for a casual dinner couldn't possibly be the head of the company your firm is desperately trying to sign a mortgage contract with next week?

Davenport: Mrs. Vance... I... I had no idea who you were! You weren't dressed in business attire!

Clara: So if I were dressed in expensive clothes, you wouldn't have screamed at my daughter? But because she was on the floor looking for her toy, you felt entitled to treat her like trash?!

Davenport: No! That's not what I meant! I was stressed about the missing timepiece!

Officer Miller: Mr. Davenport, calm down. Let's address the stolen property claim. Where did you last have your watch?

Davenport: I had it on my wrist when I sat down at my table over there! Then I put it in my coat pocket while I was washing my hands in the restroom!

Clara: You took off a sixty-thousand-dollar watch and put it in your coat pocket in a public restaurant?

Davenport: It was getting wet! I put it in my inner pocket! Then when I walked past this table, the girl was on the ground and bumped into my legs!

Officer Miller: Little girl, what is your name?

Lily: My name is Lily...

Officer Miller: Lily, did you touch this man's jacket when you were on the floor?

Lily: No, sir! My stuffed bear rolled under the chair near his table. I crawled under to get it, and then he started shouting at me that I was a thief! I got so scared I dropped my bear again!

Officer Miller: Where is your stuffed bear right now, Lily?

Lily: It's still under that big chair over there...

Officer Miller walked over to the dining table Davenport had been sitting at earlier, shining his flashlight under the long white tablecloth and heavy leather chairs.

Officer Miller: Is this your bear, Lily?

Lily: Yes! That's Barnaby!

Officer Miller reached down, pulling out the small brown stuffed bear. As he picked it up, a shiny metallic object tumbled out from behind the deep leather seat cushion of Davenport's chair, hitting the floor with a heavy metallic clink.

Officer Miller: Well, well. What do we have here?

Diner A: Look! Is that the watch?!

Diner B: It was right under his own seat the whole time!

Clara: Look at that, Mr. Davenport. The diamond watch you accused an eight-year-old of stealing was slipped between the cushions of your own chair.

Davenport stared at the glittering watch on the floor, his entire body trembling as sweat broke out across his forehead.

Davenport: I... I must have missed my pocket when I put it away at the table... it must have slid out when I stood up...

Clara: You slipped it into your cushion by accident, and instead of checking your own seat, you immediately blamed a crying child on the floor!
