Mark answered the phone quickly, holding it tight against his ear.
"Mr. Davis, this is Doctor Miller from the emergency ward," a voice said.
"How is my mother doing, doctor?" Mark asked, holding his breath.
"She has woken up and is asking for you," the doctor reported kindly.
"She suffered a concussion, but she is going to recover well," he added.
Mark let out a long sigh of immense relief and smiled at Leo.
"Thank you so much, doctor. We are coming right now," Mark said.
Mark looked down at his young son, who was watching him expectantly.
"Grandma is awake and she is going to be fine," Mark announced happily.
Leo wrapped his small arms around Mark's waist, hugging him tight.
"I was so scared you wouldn't believe me, Dad," Leo admitted softly.
"I will always believe you, Leo," Mark said, kissing his forehead gently.
"You were so brave today, and you saved our entire family," Mark added.
They got into Mark's SUV and drove straight to the hospital downtown.
They walked into the bright, clean room where Evelyn lay in bed.
Evelyn smiled softly despite the white bandage wrapped around her forehead.
"Mark... Leo... I am so glad you are here," Evelyn said quietly.
Mark sat in the chair beside her bed, holding her hand gently.
"Vanessa was arrested, Mother. She took the estate papers," Mark explained.
"I know, son," Evelyn said weakly, nodding her head on the pillow.
"She asked me to sign a power of attorney form earlier," Evelyn revealed.
"When I refused, she followed me to the stairs in a rage," she added.
"Leo saw everything and spoke up," Mark told his mother proudly.
Evelyn reached out her other hand to hold Leo's small fingers tight.
"You are my little hero, Leo," Evelyn whispered with happy tears falling.
Two weeks later, the sun shone brightly over the mansion once again.
The high-stress days of court hearings and lawyers were finally ending smoothly.
Vanessa remained in custody while awaiting her trial for grand theft assault.
The stolen documents were recovered safely from her accomplice's downtown office.
Mark sat on the porch steps next to his recovered, healthy mother.
Leo was playing happily in the green yard with their new dog.
"Our home feels peaceful again, son," Evelyn remarked with a smile.
"It really does, Mom," Mark agreed, looking out over the property.
"Honesty saved us from losing everything we loved," Mark reflected deeply.
They watched Leo run across the grass, his bright laughter filling air.
