Vanessa's face drained of all color as Leo uttered those clear words.
She backed up until her hips pressed against the smooth marble railing.
"He is making things up, Mark!" Vanessa shouted in sheer panic.
"I was in bed reading all night long!" she insisted forcefully.
"No, you weren't," Leo insisted, standing tall beside his father now.
"I got up to get water at midnight," the young boy explained.
"I saw the office door open and heard a man talking loudly," he said.
Mark released his hold on Vanessa and took a step back toward Leo.
He pulled his cell phone from his pocket and called his security company.
"I need the full video logs from last night immediately," Mark demanded.
Vanessa reached out her hands as if begging for forgiveness or mercy.
"Mark, please listen to me before you do something crazy," she begged.
"You brought a stranger into our home?" Mark asked, his anger rising.
"It was just my financial advisor!" Vanessa lied, stuttering over words.
"We were just working on the estate documents for the family!" she said.
"You have no authority over the estate papers," Mark said coldly.
"My mother controls the family trust fund until her death," Mark added.
Leo looked up at his father with determination in his brown eyes.
"She took the big blue folder out of the safe, Dad," Leo added.
Mark froze as a wave of realization hit him right in the chest.
The blue folder contained the legal land deeds and life insurance policies.
Mark walked past Vanessa without another word and went to his office.
The heavy oak door was unlocked, though he always kept it secured.
He walked straight to the wall safe behind the large family portrait.
The keypad light was blinking red, indicating an incorrect code entry.
Mark entered his master code and pulled the heavy steel door open.
The top shelf was completely empty where the blue folder usually sat.
Mark felt a cold sweat break out along the back of his neck.
He turned around and saw Vanessa standing in the office doorway.
She held her designer handbag tightly against her waist with both hands.
"Where are the documents, Vanessa?" Mark asked, his voice shaking angry.
"I was trying to protect our future, Mark!" Vanessa claimed loudly.
"Your mother was going to remove you from the primary inheritance!" she lied.
"My mother loves me and would never do that," Mark replied flatly.
Suddenly, Mark's phone chimed with a high-priority security alert notification.
The security system sent the raw video files directly to his phone screen.
Mark opened the app and played the clip from eleven o'clock yesterday.
