Clara: He's almost at the bottom! Catch him!
I threw my entire body forward across the slick marble floor, sliding on my knees in a frantic lunge.
Marcus: No! I got you!
Marcus roared in desperate panic, sprinting across the hall with arms outstretched to intercept the falling child.
Clara: Please, please let him reach him in time!
My fingers grazed the smooth marble as a sharp gasp escaped my lips.
Marcus: Got him! I have my boy!
A heavy thud echoed through the foyer as his knees slammed violently into the marble tiles, absorbing the brutal impact.
Clara: Oh, thank God. Oh, thank sweet Jesus in heaven.
Heavy panting wracked our chests as a tense ambient drone hummed while Marcus pulled the wrapped baby safely against his chest.
Marcus: You're safe... Daddy's here...
He whispered the emotional reassurance, cradling the tiny bundle with an iron grip to shield it from any residual danger.
Clara: Let me see him! Is my baby okay?!
I scrambled across the floor, my hands trembling violently as I reached out to touch my son.
Marcus: He's breathing. He's shaking, but he's alive, Clara.
Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face, mixing with the cold sweat of sheer terror as Marcus unbuckled the outer blanket layer.
Baby Leo: Wah! Wah! Wah!
A piercing, hysterical cry erupted from the newborn as he woke up in absolute shock.
Clara: Shh, shh, my little angel. Hush now, Mommy and Daddy are right here with you.
Marcus pressed his face against the soft blanket, rocking our son back and forth while sobbing softly.
Marcus: I'm never letting you go...
His voice broke completely as he buried his face in the baby's blanket, weeping openly on the cold floor.
Clara: How could a grandmother do this? How could anyone be so monstrously cruel?
The soft sobbing echoed through the cavernous room as Marcus checked every inch of his tiny body for injuries.
Marcus: Thank heavens the thick blanket cushioned the fall. He's whole, my baby.
Footsteps pounded heavily against the outer hallway, signaling that the true reckoning had only just begun.
