Mark rushed across the room and dropped down to his knees.
His knees hit the hard wooden floor right next to Ellen's body.
Ellen lay very still with her eyes closed tightly in pain.
Mark: Ellen, please talk to me right now!
Ellen: My stomach hurts so much, Mark.
Mark: She is not moving normally, Sarah!
Sarah took a slow step backward as reality began to sink in.
Her hands started shaking uncontrollably against her bright blue sweater.
She stumbled back and collapsed onto her knees beside the sofa.
Sarah: I did not mean for her to fall like that!
Mark: You came into my home and attacked us!
Mark pulled his smartphone quickly out of his jacket pocket.
His hands trembled violently as he dialed the emergency digits fast.
He pressed the phone hard against his right ear while breathing heavily.
Mark: I need an ambulance immediately at forty-two Maple Drive!
Dispatcher: Sir, please stay calm and state the emergency.
Mark: My sister-in-law just assaulted my pregnant wife!
Mark: She is lying on the floor and in deep pain!
Mark: I am pressing full criminal charges against her today!
Sarah: Mark, please do not call the police on me!
Mark: You threatened my family and hurt my unborn child!
Mark held Ellen's hand firmly while listening to the dispatcher's instructions.
The dispatcher told him to keep Ellen completely still until help arrived.
Sarah sobbed loudly on the floor near the overturned glass vase.
Sarah: She stole my life savings, you have to understand!
Mark: Shut your mouth and stay away from my wife!
The sound of loud sirens echoed in the distance outside the home.
Mark looked down at Ellen's pale face with tears in his eyes.
He wiped a lock of hair away from her damp forehead gently.
Mark: Stay with me, honey, help is almost here.
Ellen: Please make sure our baby is going to be okay.
Mark: I promise I will protect both of you forever.
The front door swung open as two paramedics rushed inside quickly.
Two police officers followed right behind them with tazers drawn ready.
Officer: Nobody move! What happened here in this house?
Mark: That woman attacked my wife and forced her down!
The officers moved fast and placed handcuffs on Sarah's shaking wrists.
Sarah: This is a massive mistake, I am his sister!
Officer: You have the right to remain silent, ma'am.
The paramedics carefully placed Ellen onto a flat orange stretcher.
Mark never let go of Ellen's cold fingers for a second.
They rolled her quickly out the front door toward the waiting ambulance.
Sarah was led away in back of a dark police cruiser.
Mark climbed into the back of the ambulance right beside Ellen.
The doors slammed shut and the vehicle sped away with lights flashing.
