The heavy double doors at the end of the bright corridor opened, and three prominent figures in expensive evening attire stepped into the hallway. At the front was Judge Thomas Vance, a senior trustee of the Sterling Family Foundation, holding a glass of wine.
Judge Vance: Arthur, my boy! We were wondering where the host went... Good heavens, what happened here?
The guests stopped in their tracks, staring at the shattered wood latch, the open hole in the wall, and the little boy clinging to Arthur's tuxedo jacket.
Isabella: Judge Vance! It's nothing at all, just a minor renovation accident! Please, let's head back to the dining room!
Arthur: It is not a renovation accident, Thomas. My wife has been locking my son inside this wall compartment.
A collective gasp went through the small crowd of wealthy attendees. Judge Vance's warm smile instantly vanished, replaced by a stern, legal gaze.
Judge Vance: What did you just say, Arthur?
Isabella: He is confused, Thomas! Arthur has been under immense pressure with the merger, he isn't thinking clearly!
Elena: She's the one lying, Judge! Look inside the compartment! There is a pillow and a water bottle sitting on the floor right now!
Judge Vance stepped forward, his polished shoes clicking against the hard floor. He leaned over, peering directly into the dark, narrow opening behind the wood paneling. His face hardened as he saw the small blanket and plastic bottle resting on the dirty floorboards.
Judge Vance: Dear God in heaven... there is a child's bed inside this wall structure.
Guest 1: Is that little Ethan?! How could anyone do such a thing?!
Guest 2: Isabella... you locked a six-year-old orphan child in a crawlspace?!
Isabella: I was keeping him out of danger! The house is being painted, the fumes are dangerous!
Arthur: The house was painted three years ago, Isabella! Stop lying!
Isabella: Fine! You want the truth?! I didn't want your baggage ruining my introduction to high society! I married a billionaire CEO, not a full-time babysitter for another woman's kid!
The entire hallway fell into a stunned, icy silence. Isabella realized what she had just blurted out, her hands flying to her mouth as she backed away toward the gold-trimmed wall.
Arthur: You married me for my money... and you treated my son like an inconvenient piece of trash.
Isabella: Arthur, no... I was just upset! I didn't mean it like that!
Judge Vance: Isabella Sterling, as the chief executor of the Sterling Trust, I am revoking your access to all joint accounts immediately under the morality clause of the family prenup.
Isabella: You can't do that! The prenup guarantees me ten million dollars upon completion of two years of marriage!
Judge Vance: Section four, paragraph two, Isabella: Any act of child abuse, endangerment, or severe domestic cruelty nullifies every single financial benefit instantly. You leave this marriage with nothing.
Isabella: Nothing?! You can't leave me with nothing! Arthur, tell him to stop!
Arthur: I am calling the police, Isabella. And then I am calling my divorce lawyer.
Isabella: Arthur, please! We can work this out! Think of the press! Think of the stock price!
Arthur: I am thinking about my son. Something I should have done the moment I brought you into this house.
Ethan pulled on his father's hand, looking up with big, hopeful eyes through his tear-stained face.
Ethan: Dad... does that mean she's going away?
Arthur: Yes, Ethan. She is going away, and she is never, ever coming back.
