Caleb: Harrison, bring the leather folder from the study desk.
Harrison: Yes, Mr. Sterling. Right away.
The guard walked quickly into the adjacent study and returned seconds later, handing Caleb a thick black leather portfolio stamped with the official seal of the state probate court.
Evelyn: What is that folder? Why are you holding my father's legal files?
Caleb: These aren't your father's files, Evelyn. These are the documents my private investigator recovered from your lawyer's office yesterday afternoon.
Evelyn: You broke into Arthur's law firm?!
Caleb: We didn't break into anything. The district attorney executed a search warrant on Vance Legal at two o'clock yesterday.
Evelyn's hands began to shake violently, her designer purse slipping from her shoulder and clattering onto the marble floor.
Evelyn: A search warrant? On what grounds?
Caleb: On grounds of grand corporate forgery, falsification of vital records, and insurance fraud.
Caleb opened the folder, pulling out three crisp white documents stamped with red notary ink.
Caleb: Do you recognize this document, Evelyn? It's an application for a delayed death certificate under the name of Maya Sterling.
Evelyn: I... I have never seen that document in my life!
Caleb: Your personal signature is on the witness line, Evelyn. Dated two months before you and I had our wedding ceremony.
Evelyn: Arthur prepared those papers! He told me it was just a formal declaration to clear the property title!
Caleb: You declared my living wife legally deceased in another state so you could push your marriage through the county clerk's office!
Evelyn: I did what my father told me to do! He said we had to secure the Sterling family assets before the fiscal year ended!
Caleb: And what about this second document? A forged power of attorney transferring the Sterling Maritime pension fund to an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands?
Evelyn stepped back, her knees hitting the bottom step of the staircase as her face turned completely ashen.
Evelyn: That was an investment allocation... Arthur handled the foreign banking...
Caleb: Arthur was arrested at the airport forty minutes ago, Evelyn. He was trying to board a private jet to Zurich with four million dollars in bearer bonds.
Evelyn: Arthur was arrested?! My father's personal attorney?!
Caleb: He sang like a bird the second the handcuffs touched his wrists. He gave the federal prosecutors every text message, every bank ledger, and every voice memo you sent him regarding Maya and my child.
Evelyn: That coward! That traitorous old coward!
Caleb: He wasn't going to spend twenty years in a federal penitentiary to protect a spoiled, psychotic heiress.
Outside the tall arched windows of the foyer, the loud, piercing wail of police sirens began to echo down the long oak-lined estate driveway.
Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand marble pillars, painting the walls in sharp, rhythmic bursts of color.
Evelyn: Caleb, please! You can't let them arrest me! My father is seventy years old! The disgrace will destroy him!
Caleb: Your father was arrested at his country club ten minutes ago, Evelyn. Your whole family empire is falling apart right now.
Evelyn collapsed onto the bottom marble step, clutching her head in her hands as loud, choking sobs finally tore from her throat.
Evelyn: We had everything... We were the most respected family in this city...
Caleb: You had stolen money and fake prestige built on lies and cruelty, Evelyn. Today, the bill has finally come due.
