The marble foyer of the Sterling mansion felt freezing cold under the afternoon light. Twenty feet above the polished stone, standing right on the curved mezzanine, Evelyn adjusted the strap of her emerald green designer dress.
Evelyn: You don't belong in my house, you little leech.
Maya: Mrs. Sterling, please! Step back from that edge right now!
Evelyn: Why should I? A street maid's child will never touch this estate's trust fund.
Maya: Put him down on the carpet! Please, I'm begging you!
Evelyn: You thought you could trap my husband with a fake pregnancy, didn't you?
Maya: He is Caleb's real son! Look at his face, he has Caleb's eyes!
Maya dropped her cleaning rag onto the white floor, her hands trembling as she looked up toward the high brass railing.
Evelyn: I don't care about his eyes. By midnight, your child won't exist to this family.
Maya: Evelyn, don't do this! You'll spend the rest of your life in prison!
Evelyn: Nobody tells me what to do in my late father's mansion.
Without blinking, the woman in the green dress opened her fingers. The tiny baby in his white cotton onesie fell straight through empty air, screaming in terror as he plummeted toward the hard marble floor.
Maya screamed, her knees skidding across the slick stone as she threw her entire body forward with outstretched arms.
A loud thud echoed against the tiles as Maya hit the ground, clutching the infant against her chest just inches before his head struck the stone.
Maya: I've got you! Oh God, I've got you!
The heavy front double wooden doors suddenly slammed open with a booming crash. Caleb Sterling stepped inside wearing a tailored black double-breasted suit, his face contorted in pure shock as he looked down at the floor, unaware that the secret behind this baby was about to destroy his entire marriage.
