The Scorched Family Photo

The Unconscious Billionaire Saved By A Girl Holding A Photo

Arthur lifted the small burned paper close to his eyes while the harsh light from the foyer chandelier shone down upon the glossy surface. The edges of the old photograph were completely black and crispy from fire, but the faces in the middle remained clear and sharp after all these years.

A young woman with light green eyes and a bright smiling face stood next to a small baby holding a red teddy bear. Behind the young mother in the original photo stood a younger Kent Sterling, holding a dark fountain pen near a thick stack of legal documents on a wooden desk.

Arthur: Where did you get this picture, little girl?

Lily: My mommy gave it to me before the big house fire.

Arthur stared at the woman's face in total shock as a terrible truth crashed into his mind like a heavy thunderbolt from the sky. The woman in the photo was his younger sister Sarah, who had vanished ten long years ago after a terrible fire destroyed her small countryside house.

For an entire decade, Kent had told the entire family that Sarah had run away after stealing money from the corporate trust fund accounts. Arthur had spent millions of dollars on private investigators, but every search led to dead ends because Kent had controlled all the legal files and police reports.

Arthur: Sarah did not run away from us, did she?

Kent: She was weak and she was going to ruin everything!

Kent raised his gun higher, his face twisting into a bitter smile as he stepped closer to the middle of the foyer room floor. His polished leather shoes made sharp clicking sounds that echoed off the high walls like gunshots cutting through the cold silent room around them.

Kent: Sarah found out about the real inheritance papers yesterday.

Arthur: You burned her house down to hide the truth!

Lily wiped a fresh tear from her cheek and pointed a tiny finger directly at the dark suit jacket that Kent was wearing over his chest. She pressed herself closer against Arthur's shoulder, her little body trembling with cold fear as the heavy guards stepped into the room.

Lily: He took mommy's papers and locked them in his dark bag.

Kent: Shut that little girl up before I do it myself!

Arthur felt a fierce heat explode inside his chest, replacing all the weakness and poison with pure unadulterated rage toward his cousin. He squeezed the burned photo tightly inside his right fist, feeling the dry paper crumble against his palm as he planned his next desperate move.

Arthur: You ruined my sister's life for a piece of paper?

Kent: That estate trust fund belongs to me, Arthur!

Kent motioned for his two large bodyguards to step forward and grab the child away from the billionaire sitting on the floor. The heavy footsteps of the men filled the room as they moved across the shiny marble towards the unconscious man and the child in red.

Arthur gripped the oxygen tank strap with his left hand while keeping his eyes locked onto Kent's smirking face just ten feet away. He knew he only had one small chance to save his sister's daughter and take back control of his family legacy before it was lost forever.

Lily: Uncle Arthur, please help me!

Arthur: Hold onto my neck as tight as you can!

The little girl threw her small arms around Arthur's neck just as the first heavy guard reached down to grab her bright red dress sleeve. Arthur gathered every remaining ounce of strength in his body, preparing to fight back against the men who had destroyed his family from within.
