The lead police officer stepped into the center of the hall, looking at the stunned crowd, the woman groaning on the marble floor, and the father holding his pale child. David immediately held up his phone and pointed toward the nanny standing terrified near the kitchen entrance, as well as Evelyn lying on the ground.
Police Officer: What happened here? Nobody move!
David: Officer, my name is David Vance. I just returned from work to find my daughter neglected and hidden in a back hallway.
David: I have bank records proving child support theft and multiple witnesses to her physical aggression.
Businessman: Officer, it's true! We all saw the little girl. She was locked away and starved while this woman spent the money!
Evelyn: He kicked me! Arrest him for assault!
Police Officer: Quiet down, ma'am! We have three dozen video recordings from guest phones showing you lunged at the child first.
The officers moved in swiftly, grabbing Evelyn by her wrists and pulling her up from the floor into metal handcuffs. Evelyn screamed and protested as she was led past her former friends, who looked away from her in absolute disgust. The mean nanny tried to sneak out through the back kitchen door, but two other officers cut her off and placed her under arrest for child endangerment as well.
Paramedics walked into the venue carrying a medical bag, stepping up to David to inspect little Lily. They checked her pulse, examined her thin arms, and confirmed that while she was malnourished, she was now completely safe in her father's loving care.
Paramedic: She needs a good meal and rest, sir. But she's going to be just fine now that you're here.
David: Thank you so much. We are going home right now.
Lily: Daddy, can we get ice cream on the way?
David: We can get all the ice cream you want, sweetheart. Forever.
David walked out of the venue into the bright, warm Texas sunshine, carrying Lily firmly in his arms while the police cruisers drove Evelyn away to the county jail. He pulled the small velvet box out of his pocket and placed the gold bracelet around Lily's wrist, watching her smile for the very first time in months. They were going to build a brand new life together, completely free from lies, greed, and fear.
