The Lies Behind Closed Doors

The Stolen Child Support That Shattered Our Family Wedding

Sitting on a cold plastic crate behind the kitchen doors was little Lily, wearing a faded satin dress that was far too small for her growing frame. Her little shoes were scuffed and torn at the toes, and her skin looked pale and thin. A mean-looking nanny hired by Evelyn was standing over the young girl, holding a half-eaten dry sandwich and scolding her in hushed tones. Lily was crying quietly, wiping tears from her cheeks with the threadbare sleeve of her old dress.

David felt a surge of rage rush through his veins like fire as he took three fast steps forward into the hallway. He pulled his trembling daughter into his strong arms, lifting her off the plastic crate and holding her firmly against his chest. Lily wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, burying her wet face into his clean black tuxedo coat and sobbing uncontrollably.

David: Lily, baby! Oh God, what happened to you?

Lily: Daddy! You came back! You really came back!

Nanny: Hey! You can't be back here! Mrs. Evelyn said she stays out of sight during the gala!

David: Get out of my face before I lose my mind!

The hired woman backed away in horror at the fierce look of fury burning in David's dark brown eyes. David held Lily close, feeling how light she was, as if she had barely been fed proper meals over the last several months. He rubbed her back gently, trying to calm her shaking body while his mind raced with unanswered questions about where his money went.

David: Shh, I'm here now. Nobody is ever going to hide you again.

Lily: Daddy... I was so hungry... Grandma wouldn't let me eat the party food.

David: WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!

David's loud voice boomed down the service corridor and rang out into the bright main ballroom of the venue. Guests turned their heads in shock as David carried his weeping daughter out from behind the velvet curtains into full view of everyone. High-key natural daylight flooded through the huge windows, illuminating the heartbreaking contrast between the dirty dress of the child and the extreme wealth of the room.

Evelyn stopped mid-sentence with her champagne glass in hand, turning around to see her son-in-law holding the young child. Her face turned pale for a quick second before she quickly put on a mask of cold authority and stepped forward across the polished marble floor.

Evelyn: PUT HER DOWN! THAT CHILD DOES NOT BELONG HERE!

David: Shut your mouth! What did you do to my daughter?!

Evelyn: David, you are making a scene! Put her back in the room this instant!

David: WHERE IS THE $5,000 I SEND EVERY MONTH GONE?!

The whole room fell into a shocked, heavy silence as David's furious shout echoed off the high white walls and framed American flag artwork. Guests started whispering to each other, pulling out their phones to record the intense family confrontation happening right in the center of the hall.
