The bright Texas sun hit the glass windows of the airport terminal as David stepped off the plane. He had been away in San Diego working non-stop on an offshore oil rig project for eight long months. Every single month, without fail, David wired five thousand dollars straight to his late wife's mother, Evelyn. Evelyn had promised to take care of his six-year-old daughter, Lily, in her beautiful Dallas home while he earned enough money for a fresh start. David missed his girl so much that his heart hurt every single day he was away.
David grabbed his heavy black duffel bag from the baggage carousel and walked straight out into the warm afternoon air. He pulled out his phone to call Evelyn, but the line went straight to voicemail just like it had for the past three days. Evelyn had claimed she was busy planning a massive family charity gala at a high-end Dallas venue, but David felt a strange knot tightening in his stomach. He decided not to go to Evelyn's house first, but instead head straight to the formal venue where the family event was taking place that afternoon.
He hopped into a taxi and told the driver the address of the grand venue near downtown Dallas. As the yellow cab drove down the highway, David looked at a picture of Lily on his phone screen. In the photo taken a year ago, she had bright rosy cheeks and a happy laugh that could light up any room. David remembered promising her that he would come back rich enough to buy her a big backyard with a wooden swingset. He smiled softly, holding a tiny velvet box in his pocket containing a polished gold bracelet he bought for her birthday.
When the cab pulled up to the venue, David saw expensive luxury cars parked along the front driveway. Velvet ropes were set up outside the entrance, and butler service was handing out sparkling glass cups to wealthy guests entering the marble hall. David looked down at his clean black tuxedo, adjusted his bow tie, and walked right past the velvet ropes into the air-conditioned building. The room was decorated with giant white flower arrangements and framed artwork of the American flag hanging on pristine white walls.
David scanned the large crowd of well-dressed people, searching for his mother-in-law and his little girl. Near the front stage, he spotted Evelyn standing near a table filled with silver trays and expensive champagne bottles. Evelyn was wearing an embroidered grey designer dress that cost thousands of dollars, laughing with wealthy local business owners. But David did not see Lily anywhere near her, which immediately made his pulse race with deep worry and fear.
He pushed through the crowd, stepping past diamond-adorned guests who turned to look at the muscular man moving with urgent purpose. As David reached the edge of the formal stage, he heard a small, muffled cry coming from a small dark hallway near the back kitchen doors. He stopped dead in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat as he recognized the faint sound of his daughter's weeping voice.
David walked quickly toward the hallway, pulling back a heavy velvet curtain that blocked the service entrance from public view. What he saw in that dim corridor made his blood run completely cold and his fists clench tightly at his sides.
