Inside the grand library, Marcus sat behind his large oak desk, opening a thick black folder containing his family estate documents.
Sarah sat in the leather chair across from him, while Julian played quietly with a wooden toy train on the rug near the fireplace.
Marcus: Sarah, before we sign these management papers, there's something you need to understand about why Vanessa did this.
Sarah: Was it really just about the trust fund money?
Marcus: It was much worse than that. Six months ago, my late wife's estate was finally processed by the probate court.
Sarah: His biological mother?
Marcus: Yes. Before she passed away, she put ninety percent of her family's inheritance into a private trust specifically locked under Julian's name.
Sarah: So Vanessa couldn't touch a single dollar of it while Julian was alive.
Marcus: Exactly. And our prenuptial agreement strictly stated that if we divorced, Vanessa would only receive a small lump sum settlement.
Sarah: But if something happened to Julian...
Marcus: If Julian passed away, the trust fund defaulted back to me. And as my legal wife, Vanessa would have controlled every cent of that multi-million dollar estate.
Sarah: That is terrifying. She was planning this for months, wasn't she?
Marcus: My private investigator called me twenty minutes before I got home today. He found out she was looking into offshore bank accounts in the Caribbean.
Sarah: She wanted to take the money and run out of the country.
Marcus: Yes. She realized I was starting to suspect her, so she tried to execute her plan today before I could file for divorce.
Sarah: Thank God you came through those doors when you did.
Marcus: I owe you everything, Sarah. Not just for catching Julian, but for having the courage to stand up to her when she had all the power in this house.
Sarah: Power doesn't give anyone the right to hurt a child, Marcus. I don't care how many diamonds she wears.
Marcus smiled, taking a silver pen and signing his name at the bottom of the new estate contract.
Marcus: Here are your new terms. Salary of one hundred and fifty thousand a year, private living quarters in the east wing, and full authority over all mansion staff.
Sarah: Marcus... this is too much. I was just a catering waitress working minimum wage this morning.
Marcus: You saved my son's life. No amount of money can ever match that. Please, take it.
Sarah looked over at Julian, who was looking up at her with big, hopeful eyes.
Julian: Please sign it, Sarah! I want you to live here with us!
Sarah: How can I say no to a face like that?
Sarah took the silver pen and signed her name smoothly on the line, officially becoming the new guardian and manager of the Montgomery home.
Marcus: Welcome to the family, Sarah.
Sarah: Thank you, Marcus. I won't let you down.
Marcus: I know you won't. Now, let's go get some dinner. I think we all deserve a proper meal after today.
Julian: Can we order pizza, Dad?! Extra cheese?!
Marcus: Whatever you want, buddy. Tonight, we celebrate.
