Four months later, the hot summer heat had given way to a cool autumn breeze across the Dallas estate.
In the courtroom downtown, Judge Patricia Sterling slammed her wooden gavel onto the bench, filling the packed room with a loud echo.
Judge Sterling: Evelyn Vance, on the counts of aggravated assault, attempted murder, and corporate embezzlement, this court finds you guilty on all charges.
Evelyn stood at the defense table in a dark orange jumpsuit, her hair graying at the roots, her wrists locked in heavy iron handcuffs.
Evelyn: Your Honor! I am a pillar of this community! I have given millions to charity!
Judge Sterling: Your charitable donations were paid for with stolen money, ma'am. And your actions toward a pregnant woman show a complete lack of human empathy.
Judge Sterling: I sentence you to twenty-two years in Texas State Penitentiary, with no eligibility for early parole.
Evelyn: NO! Marcus, tell her! Tell her you forgive me!
Marcus sat in the front row of the gallery, his arm wrapped around Clara, who was holding their newly born baby girl, Lily, wrapped in a pink blanket.
Marcus didn't say a single word. He simply stared at his mother with cold indifference as the bailiffs pulled her through the side door to begin her sentence.
Outside the courthouse, news reporters crowded around the steps, flashing cameras as Marcus and Clara walked down toward their waiting car.
Reporter: Mr. Vance! How do you feel about your mother's twenty-two-year sentence?!
Marcus: Justice was served today. My priority is protecting my family and building a safe future for my children.
Later that evening, back at the Dallas mansion, the courtyard was filled with soft warm light.
The pool was calm and clear, reflecting the starry Texas sky near the framed flag artwork on the wall.
Sarah brought out a tray of warm tea, setting it on the patio table where Marcus and Clara were sitting together.
Sarah: Here is your chamomiles, Mrs. Vance. Little Lily is fast asleep upstairs in her crib.
Clara: Thank you, Sarah. You've been such a blessing to us through all of this.
Marcus: We couldn't have made it through without you, Sarah. You're part of this family now.
Sarah: I'm just glad peace has finally returned to this house, Mr. Vance.
As Sarah walked back inside, Clara leaned her head against Marcus's shoulder, looking out at the peaceful water.
Clara: Do you think we can finally leave the nightmare behind us?
Marcus: Yes, Clara. The nightmare is over. Nobody will ever threaten our happiness again.
Marcus pulled her close, kissing her forehead as they watched Toby play happily in the living room, knowing their home was finally safe, whole, and free from greed.
