Handcuffs On The Marble

The front double oak doors burst open as four uniformed police officers marched into the spacious living room, led by Detective Vance in a dark trench coat. Paramedics carrying a trauma kit and a folding stretcher followed close behind.

Detective Vance: Police! Nobody move! Where is the child?

Robert: He's right here in my arms, Detective. He's severely malnourished and dehydrated.

Paramedic: Get the oxygen mask and warm blankets over here right now! Let's check his vitals!

The paramedics gently set Toby onto the folding stretcher, wrapping him in warm blankets while checking his pulse and lungs. Lily stood right beside the stretcher, holding Toby's hand tight as the medical team worked.

Lily: Don't be scared, Toby. They're good doctors!

Toby: I'm not scared... my daddy is here...

Detective Vance stepped up to Evelyn, who was trying to slip out through the dining room archway.

Detective Vance: Evelyn Sterling? Step back into the center of the room.

Evelyn: Detective, listen to me! This is a private family dispute! My husband has been under severe mental stress!

Detective Vance: Save your story for the magistrate judge, ma'am. Look at that hole in the floor.

Detective Vance walked over to the shattered wooden floorboards, shining his high-powered flashlight down into the pitch-black opening. The flashlight beam illuminated a small mattress, a plastic water jug, and a bucket sitting on the cold concrete slab six feet below.

Detective Vance: My God... this is felony child endangerment, kidnapping, and human trafficking.

Evelyn: It wasn't human trafficking! He was family!

Detective Vance: Keeping a seven-year-old relative in a dark hole under your living room is federal human cruelty, Mrs. Sterling. Handcuff her, officers.

The two officers pulled Evelyn's hands behind her beige sweater, snapping the cold steel handcuffs tightly around her wrists.

Evelyn: Robert! Tell them to stop! Tell them we can handle this through our corporate legal team!

Robert: Our corporate legal team won't save you from a twenty-year state prison sentence, Evelyn.

Evelyn: You ungrateful bastard! I gave you two children! I kept this family at the top of high society!

Robert: You gave me a home built on a torture chamber, Evelyn. Get out of my sight.

The officers turned Evelyn around, escorting her across the light marble floor toward the front entrance. Local news camera crews who had monitored the emergency dispatch swarmed the driveway, flashbulbs exploding continuously against the windows.

Reporter A: Mrs. Sterling! Did you lock your husband's nephew under the floorboards for seven years?

Reporter B: Was this done to steal a forty-million-dollar trust fund?!

Evelyn thrashed against the officers' grip, trying to hide her face, but the news crews captured every second of her ruined expression as she was pushed into the back seat of the squad car.

The heavy car door slammed shut with a metallic thud, cutting off her hysterical screaming as the cruiser sped away into the daylight.
