Evelyn: Robert, I am begging you on my life! Put that hammer down right now!
Robert: Stand back, Evelyn! I need to know why cold air is coming through these boards!
Lily: Break it, Daddy! Help Toby!
Evelyn lunged forward, trying to grab Robert's arm to stop him, but he pulled back. With a furious roar, he brought the heavy steel sledgehammer crashing down onto the light wooden section of the floor. The impact echoed through the high-ceilinged room like a thunderclap. Splintering wood cracked and shattered, sending dust and debris flying across the white marble tile.
Evelyn: No! Oh God, no!
Robert: There's a hollow frame down here! This floor isn't solid concrete!
Robert swung the sledgehammer a second time, smashing through the reinforced pine subfloor. A dark, gaping hole opened beneath our feet, revealing a pitch-black cavity hidden deep inside the foundation of the house. The stench of damp concrete and old dust poured out into the warm, sunlit living room.
Lily: Look! He's down there!
Robert: Who is down there?! Speak to me!
A low, raspy whimpering echoed from the dark hole. Before anyone could take another breath, a pale, bloody hand reached up out of the darkness, its thin fingers gripping the wooden handle of the sledgehammer tightly.
Muffled Voice: Help me... it's so dark...
Robert gasped, stumbling back three steps on the marble floor as his face turned as white as ash. Evelyn let out a choked, desperate scream, dropping to her knees and covering her face with her hands.
Robert: Who locked my son under this floor?!
Evelyn: Robert... please let me explain...
Robert: Explain what?! There is a living child trapped in the foundation of my home!
Robert dropped to his knees beside the broken hole, ignoring the jagged wooden splinters as he reached his arms down into the dark opening. He grabbed the small, shaking hands of the young boy and carefully pulled him up into the bright daylight of the living room.
The boy looked no older than seven years old. He wore a dirty white shirt, his pale skin covered in dark soot smudges and dried blood. He clutched a small, worn stuffed bear against his chest, his eyes wide with terror as he looked around the sunlit room.
Toby: Are... are you my daddy?
Robert: My God... look at his eyes... he has my eyes.
Evelyn: Robert, don't look at him! Put him back or the lawyers will destroy us!
Robert: Shut your mouth, Evelyn! What lawyers?! Whose child is this?!
