The morning sun flooded our spacious living room, lighting up the white walls and polished marble floors. A large American flag hung proudly on the main wall, casting a long shadow over the scene. But the quiet peace of our home was completely shattered. Eight-year-old Lily knelt on the hard floor, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she clutched her denim jeans.
Lily: Daddy, please! My brother is crying under the floor! He's begging us to save him!
Robert: Lily, stop this right now. You are hyperventilating over nothing.
Lily: I'm not lying, Daddy! Put your ear right here! He's cold and he's screaming for help!
Robert stood over her holding a heavy steel sledgehammer he had brought in from the garage. His face was tense, his hands trembling as he stared down at the narrow crack between the light wooden floorboards.
Robert: There is nothing beneath this marble, Lily. The house sits on a solid concrete foundation slab.
Lily: No it doesn't! He tapped three times! He said his name is Toby!
Before Robert could lower the hammer, my mother, Evelyn, rushed into the room from the hallway. Her face was pale, her beige sweater rumpled as she threw her hands up in utter panic.
Evelyn: Robert, please stop! She's imagining things! Please don't open it!
Robert: Evelyn, why are you screaming like that? You look like you're about to pass out.
Evelyn: She's a child with an overactive imagination! She listened to a ghost story at school!
Robert leaned down, pressing his hand against the narrow seam between the floorboards. His heavy breathing filled the quiet room as he felt a cold draft pushing up through the hairline crack.
Robert: If she's telling the truth... what have we been living on?!
Evelyn: Please don't! If you open it, everything will change forever!
Robert ignored her pleas. He raised the heavy sledgehammer high over his head with both hands, his eyes locked onto the floor under the American flag, determined to uncover the truth hidden beneath our feet.
