The morning sun poured through the massive glass windows of the grand mansion, lighting up the bright white marble floors.
Little Lily was sitting quietly near the top of the grand staircase, playing with her small wooden toy boat.
Her stepmother, Clara, stood near the edge of the second-story railing, watching the young girl with cold, calm eyes.
Clara had married Arthur three years ago, gaining access to his massive fortune, trust fund, and historic estate.
However, Arthur's will clearly stated that the entire estate would be passed down directly to his young daughter, Lily.
Clara deeply resented the fact that a little child stood between her and total control over the immense wealth.
Down below in the foyer, the house maid, Elena, was carefully polishing a glass side table near the front entrance.
Elena had worked for the family for over ten years and loved Lily like her own biological daughter.
She looked up when she heard the sudden sound of wood scraping loudly against the polished banister railings.
Clara was leaning over the top edge, holding small Lily completely over the dangerous drop toward the hard floor.
Elena gasped in horror as she saw the little girl dangling helplessly high above the gleaming marble ground.
The wealthy stepmother tilted her hands slightly, releasing her firm grip and letting the young girl drop downward.
Elena did not hesitate for a single second when she saw the sweet child falling through the air.
She sprinted across the polished marble floor with incredible speed, throwing her body forward to catch the girl.
Her knees slammed hard against the marble, but her arms closed tightly around Lily just in time.
The impact knocked the breath right out of Elena, but the child was safe inside her arms.
Lily began crying hysterically, wrapping her tiny hands around Elena's black and white maid uniform tightly.
Elena held the small girl close against her chest, rocking her gently to calm her shaking body down.
"I've got you, sweetie, you're safe now," Elena whispered softly while wiping away the child's warm tears.
Clara hurried down the grand staircase, her expensive orange designer dress rustling loudly with every fast step.
Her face was pale, but her eyes held a frantic and defensive look as she approached the maid.
"It was a complete accident, she just slipped right from my hands!" Clara shouted defensively at Elena.
Elena looked up at the wealthy woman with intense anger, knowing deep down that it was no accident.
Before Clara could say another word, the heavy wooden front doors of the mansion were pushed open wide.
Arthur stepped inside, dressed in a sharp beige suit after returning home early from his downtown corporate office.
