Three months later, bright golden morning sunlight streamed through the tall bay windows of the dining room.
Lily: Look, Amanda! The garden roses are blooming again!
Amanda: I see them, Lily. Dad always said those bushes just needed plenty of water and some peace and quiet.
Evelyn walked into the room carrying a porcelain teapot, looking healthy, vibrant, and smiling warmly.
Evelyn: Who is ready for some fresh herbal tea and warm cinnamon rolls?
Jason: I will take two of those rolls, Evelyn. Your baking beats the bakery downtown every single day.
Evelyn: Sit down, Jason. You have worked long enough on those audit files this morning.
Jason set down a neat stack of legal folders on the antique oak table.
Jason: The probate judge signed the final decree yesterday afternoon. All of Claire's fraudulent claims have been officially dismissed with prejudice.
Amanda: And what about the criminal trial?
Jason: Her defense team offered a plea deal this morning. She is accepting twelve years without parole for kidnapping, elder abuse, and wire fraud.
Evelyn: Twelve years... I do not feel joy hearing that, but I finally feel safe in my own home.
Amanda: That house will never see another lock like that again, Mom. The contractor removed that entire basement partition last week.
Lily: We turned it into an art studio! I painted purple butterflies on the wall!
Jason: It looks fantastic, Lily. Much better than cold concrete.
Amanda stood up and looked around the warm, sunlit room that had once felt so cold and threatening.
Amanda: We should sign the paperwork to transfer the estate shares into an educational trust fund for Lily.
Evelyn: That is exactly what your father wanted before everything fell apart. A secure future for both of you.
Jason: I will file the trust documents with the county recorder on Monday morning. Everything is protected under clean legal titles now.
Amanda walked over to her mother and hugged her tightly from behind her chair.
Amanda: I am never moving back to New York, Mom. I am opening my design firm right here in town.
Evelyn: You do not have to stay just to protect me, darling. I am stronger than you think.
Amanda: I know you are, Mom. But family belongs together under one roof.
Lily held up a freshly drawn picture of the four of them standing in front of the house under a bright yellow sun.
Lily: Look, Mommy! No locks, no secrets, just us!
Evelyn took the drawing, her eyes welling with happy tears, and pinned it proudly to the refrigerator door.
Evelyn: No locks, no secrets. Just our family, finally back home where we belong.
