Claire stood at the base of the stairs in an immaculate beige designer coat, clutching a leather briefcase.
Claire: Amanda, step away from that room immediately. You are trespassing on private property.
Amanda: Private property? You locked my mother in a windowless dungeon like an animal!
Claire: Do not be dramatic. Your mother has severe cognitive decline and was wandering into traffic. I created a secure, supervised environment until the conservatorship hearing next Tuesday.
Evelyn: That is a lie! I do not have dementia, Claire, and you know it!
Claire's eyes flicked to Evelyn, a cold sneer forming on her lips.
Claire: Quiet, Evelyn. You are not well, and the medical records my private physician signed prove it beyond any legal doubt.
Jason: Claire, this is false imprisonment. You cannot keep someone locked behind a padlock without court orders!
Claire: Stay out of this, Jason. You are just an associate at the accounting firm. Your job was simply to review the estate audit, not play detective.
Jason: I am an officer of the court when it comes to financial conservatorships. What you are doing is a felony.
Claire: Nobody cares about your ethics when millions of dollars in corporate shares are on the line.
Amanda: You did all this for the inheritance money?
Claire: Your father built an empire, Amanda. He was foolish enough to leave half of the voting stock in Evelyn's name, despite their divorce settlement terms.
Amanda: Because she earned it! She helped him build that company for twenty years before you ever showed up!
Claire: And she gave up her rights when she took the original alimony package. But your father never updated the trust beneficiary clauses.
Amanda: So you forged her signature on the transfer documents?
Claire: I did what was necessary to protect the business from falling into incompetent hands.
Evelyn leaned against the doorframe, her voice trembling but clear.
Evelyn: I refused to sign over the children's trust fund to your offshore accounts. That is why you locked me down here.
Claire: You should have signed when I offered you a comfortable condo in Florida, Evelyn. Now you will leave with nothing.
Amanda: She is leaving with me right now. We are going straight to the police station.
Claire reached into her purse and pulled out a slim smartphone, tapping the screen with calm confidence.
Claire: Call whoever you want, Amanda. The local sheriff is a primary donor to my charity board. By the time anyone gets here, you will be the ones facing breaking-and-entering charges.
Jason: You really think your political connections can cover up kidnapping?
Claire: It is not kidnapping when a legal guardian secures a confused patient inside her primary residence.
Amanda stepped forward until she was inches away from Claire's face.
Amanda: You forgot one small detail, Claire.
Claire: And what would that be, little girl?
Amanda pointed toward the ceiling joist directly above the basement door.
Amanda: My father installed nanny cams inside every smoke detector in this house five years ago.
