The distant sirens screamed to a halt directly outside in the front driveway.
Claire: You ruined everything! Do you have any idea what will happen to the company stock when this hits the morning news?
Amanda: I care about my family, Claire. You only ever cared about the balance sheet.
Heavy boots thudded across the hardwood floor on the main level above them.
Voice: County Sheriff's Department! Is anyone down there?
Jason: Down here, officers! In the basement! We have a medical emergency and an illegal detainment!
Two uniformed deputies hurried down the stairs, service weapons unholstered at their sides.
Deputy Miller: Everyone keep your hands where we can see them! What is the situation here?
Claire immediately smoothed her hair, putting on a trembling, tearful performance.
Claire: Deputy Miller, thank goodness you arrived! My stepdaughter and her friend broke into my home and attacked me while I was caring for my ill family member!
Deputy Miller: Stepdaughter? Amanda, is that you?
Amanda: Deputy Miller, you knew my father for fifteen years. Look at that steel padlock on the floor.
The deputy looked down at the twisted iron hasp, the splintered wood, and then inside the dark room.
Deputy Miller: Evelyn? Good heavens... Evelyn, what happened to you?
Evelyn: Deputy, she held me here against my will. She took my thyroid medication and refused to let me leave until I signed over the family trust.
Claire: She is delusional, Miller! I have medical affidavits in my briefcase!
Jason: Deputy, I am Jason Vance, senior forensic accountant for the Vance-Miller Group. I have full digital server logs confirming the false imprisonment and extortion attempts.
Deputy Miller glanced at his partner, his expression turning to stone.
Deputy Miller: Turn around, Claire. Put your hands behind your back.
Claire: What? Are you out of your mind? You cannot arrest me! Do you know who my corporate attorneys are?
Deputy Miller: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
The handcuffs clicked loudly around Claire's wrists, cutting off her shrill protests.
Claire: Amanda, call off your lawyer! We can settle this out of court! I will give you the entire estate!
Amanda: We do not need you to give us anything, Claire. The law will take care of that.
The second officer escorted the fuming stepmother up the stairs toward the waiting squad cars.
Deputy Miller knelt down next to Evelyn, wrapping his warm fleece jacket around her frail shoulders.
Deputy Miller: Paramedics are right behind us, Evelyn. We are going to get you checked out at the regional medical center immediately.
Evelyn: Thank you, Tom. I thought I would never see the sunlight again.
Amanda: You are safe now, Mom. It is completely over.
Lily clutched Evelyn's hand, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes.
Lily: Are we going to have breakfast together tomorrow, Mommy?
Evelyn: Yes, sweetie. Pancakes with extra syrup, just like your father used to make.
Jason touched Amanda's shoulder gently as they watched the EMTs descend the stairs with a stretcher.
Jason: We still have a long road ahead with the legal proceedings and the probate court.
Amanda: Let the lawyers fight. We already won the only thing that mattered.
