Justice In The Morning Light

The Millionaire Evicted His Wife Until Her Real Estate Deed Appeared

The dawn sun broke through the storm clouds, casting golden rays across the rolling lawn of the Sterling estate.

Karen sat at the head of the long oak dining table, sipping hot black coffee as her laptop chimed with incoming messages.

Karen: Good morning, Arthur. Is the line secure?

Arthur: Perfectly secure, Karen. The entire board of directors is on the conference bridge waiting for your opening statement.

Karen: Has Richard attempted to dial into the corporate server this morning?

Arthur: His executive credentials were permanently revoked at six AM. Security guards at corporate headquarters have his picture posted at every security turnstile.

Karen: Good. Put the board members through.

A soft click signaled the activation of the multi-party speakerphone.

Board Member Collins: Karen? Is that you? We received the financial disclosure packets late last night.

Karen: Good morning, members of the board. Yes, it is me. And every document you reviewed regarding Richard's offshore diversion of company assets has been fully verified by state auditors.

Board Member Evans: The numbers are appalling, Karen. Over fourteen million dollars diverted through shell companies for personal luxuries and private real estate leases.

Karen: Which is why the resolution before you today is straightforward: immediate removal of Richard Vance as Chief Executive Officer, forfeiture of all unvested stock options, and full cooperation with the district attorney's financial crimes unit.

Board Member Collins: How do you vote your forty percent controlling block, Mrs. Vance?

Karen: I vote in favor of immediate termination and criminal referral.

Board Member Evans: The motion carries unanimously. The press release will be issued before the market opens at nine-thirty.

Karen: Thank you, gentlemen. The company will now return to the principles my father founded it on: honesty, accountability, and real value.

Karen disconnected the call and closed her laptop screen with a quiet, satisfying snap.

She walked out onto the stone terrace, breathing in the crisp, clean autumn air rising from the sparkling lake below.

Her phone buzzed on the iron patio table, showing an unknown number from a local budget motel.

Karen answered, placing the phone calmly against her ear.

Richard: Karen... please. Vanessa took my rental car and left me at this filthy roadside motel on Route 9.

Karen: Loyalty is expensive, Richard. It seems you ran out of funds to afford hers.

Richard: The bank froze all my personal checking accounts! I can't even pay for breakfast or order a taxi to the courthouse!

Karen: That tends to happen when a federal freeze order is filed against an embezzler.

Richard: We built a life together! You can't just leave me out here on the highway with nothing!

Karen: Last night, you told me our marriage was merely a liability on your balance sheet.

Richard: I was angry! I wasn't thinking straight! Please, just send a car to pick me up. We can work this out privately!

Karen: I already sent a car for you, Richard.

Richard: You did? Thank God... Karen, thank you. I knew you still had a heart.

Karen: Don't thank me yet. The car belongs to the state attorney general's office. They have a warrant for your arrest.

A distant siren wailed in the background on the other end of the line, growing louder by the second.

Richard: Karen! No! Wait, don't hang up—!

Karen tapped the red end-call button and dropped the phone into her cardigan pocket.

She leaned against the stone balustrade, watching the sun illuminate the proud family estate that would never be stolen from her again.
