David: This smells like prescription medication. Mother, do you recognize this smell?
Victoria: Of course not! Why would I recognize chemical smells?! I don't work in a laboratory!
David: You take sleeping pills every night, Mother. Strong ones. The ones prescribed by Dr. Aris.
Victoria: Are you seriously implying that I would poison my own biological grandson?! Have you completely lost your mind, David?
David: I am asking questions, Mother! My son's life is on the line!
Elena: Mr. Vance, look under the nursery sink. I found an empty pill bottle shoved behind the spare towels an hour ago.
Victoria's face flushed bright red, her eyes darting toward the bathroom door with a sudden look of panic.
Victoria: She planted that! She's trying to frame me so you won't fire her!
David: Move out of the way, Mother.
David walked past his mother and opened the wooden cabinet beneath the nursery sink. He reached into the dark corner, pulling out a small brown prescription bottle. The label read: Victoria Vance - Zolpidem 10mg. The bottle, which was refilled just three days ago, was completely empty.
David: This was refilled on Tuesday for thirty pills, Mother. Where are the rest of them?
Victoria: I... I dropped them down the bathroom drain by accident! I have arthritis in my hands, David!
David: Thirty pills down the drain?! Do you think I'm stupid?!
Elena: She wanted the baby to be sick, Mr. Vance. Every time the baby cries or gets ill, she tells you that you aren't capable of being a single father.
David: What...?
Elena: She told me last week that if the baby requires specialized medical care, she can petition the court for full custody and control of your late wife's estate trust!
David stood frozen, the heavy prescription bottle crushing in his tight grip. His wife had left a fifty-million-dollar trust fund specifically designated for their son, managed by whoever held legal custody of the child until he turned twenty-one.
David: You wanted the custody rights... didn't you, Mother?
Victoria: That estate belongs to the Vance family! Your late wife was a nobody who trapped you into marriage! I was only trying to protect our family's wealth!
David: You were poisoning a three-week-old infant for a trust fund?!
Victoria: I wasn't trying to kill him! I only gave him a tiny amount to make him look frail! Just enough so the doctors would say you were unfit to care for him!
David: You monster... you absolute monster!
Victoria took a step back as David's voice echoed off the walls of the nursery. Her smooth, cold composure was completely gone, replaced by frantic fear.
Victoria: David, listen to me! I am your mother! I raised you! You can't choose a hired maid over your own blood!
David: Blood doesn't mean anything if you're willing to murder my child for money!
