The police officers escorted Evelyn down the center walkway of the grand dining hall. She thrashing against their grip, her maroon velvet dress dragging across the cold marble floor as guests stepped back in disgust, capturing every second of her downfall on their phones.
Evelyn: Richard! Do something! Call the governor! Call anyone!
Richard: I'm hiring my own lawyer, Mother. I'm telling the district attorney everything you made me do.
Evelyn: You coward! You ungrateful little rat!
The heavy mahogany double doors slammed shut behind Evelyn, cutting off her shrill screams as the police cruisers sped away into the night, lights flashing red and blue against the manicured front lawn.
Judge Harrison turned around and walked up to Maya, taking her hands into his own with a warm, respectful smile.
Judge Harrison: Maya Sterling... or should I say, CEO of Sterling Enterprises.
Maya: Please, Judge Harrison, just Maya is fine.
Judge Harrison: You saved my life tonight, child. If you hadn't pulled that chair away when you did, I would not be standing here right now.
Maya: I couldn't let an innocent man get hurt because of her greed, sir.
Judge Harrison: Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, I will officially sign the court order validating your father's true will. The entire Sterling estate, including this mansion and the corporate shares, will be legally transferred to your name.
Maya: Thank you, Judge Harrison. I promise I will use my father's wealth to help those who truly need it.
Mr. Thomas: Miss Maya... on behalf of the entire household staff, we want to apologize for not speaking up sooner. We were all terrified of Mrs. Evelyn.
Maya: You don't have to apologize, Mr. Thomas. You stood up when it counted most tonight. Every single worker in this mansion is getting a raise tomorrow morning, and nobody will ever be mistreated in this house again.
The remaining guests in the dining hall broke into a loud, enthusiastic round of applause. Mr. Thomas smiled warmly, bowing his head in deep respect to the young woman who had transformed from a mistreated maid into the rightful owner of the estate in a single night.
Maya walked up to the large floor-to-ceiling window at the front of the hall, looking out at the peaceful star-filled night sky. The dark storm of fear, cruelty, and deceit that had hung over the Sterling estate for years had finally cleared away.
She reached down and adjusted the simple apron tied around her waist, taking a deep breath of fresh air. Her father's legacy was finally restored, justice had prevailed, and her new life was just beginning.
