The grand dining hall of the Sterling estate glittered under towering crystal chandeliers. Soft chatter and the delicate clinking of wine glasses echoed off the polished marble floors. Near the head table, a woman in an elegant maroon velvet dress smiled warmly, gesturing for an older gentleman in a tailored tuxedo to take his seat.
Evelyn: Please, Judge Harrison, sit right here at the head of the table. We saved the guest of honor seat just for you.
Judge Harrison: Thank you, Evelyn. It has been a lovely evening for the charity gala.
Evelyn: The pleasure is ours, Judge. You deserve the best seat in the room.
The distinguished older judge smiled and adjusted his tuxedo jacket. He pulled out the heavy mahogany chair and began to sit down. But before his weight touched the cushion, a young waitress in a simple black uniform rushed past the formal dinner table.
Maya: Wait! Sir, stop!
In a sudden burst of speed, Maya reached out and violently pulled the chair backward across the slick marble floor. The sudden movement caught Judge Harrison completely off guard. He lost his balance, his arms flailing in the air as he crashed heavily onto the hard floor with a thud.
Evelyn: What on earth do you think you are doing?
The entire hall fell dead silent as horrified gasps erupted from the wealthy guests. Evelyn’s face twisted in pure rage. She marched straight up to the trembling young waitress, raised her hand high, and delivered a heavy slap across Maya's cheek.
Evelyn: You clumsy, worthless girl! Judge Harrison! Get this girl out of here right now!
Maya fell to her knees on the marble floor, holding her reddened cheek as hot tears spilled down her face. But instead of running away, she pointed a shaking finger at the overturned chair.
Maya: Sir! Look under your chair! Please, just look under the seat!
Judge Harrison groaned as he pushed himself up from the floor, staring down at the crying girl with sharp, confused eyes, unaware of the deadly trap resting inches beneath the velvet cushion.
