Isabella: What did you just call me?
Mia: I said happy birthday, Isabella. I'm your sister.
Isabella: You're insane! I don't have a sister!
Mia: Look at what I'm holding in my hands.
Mia lifted her hands, holding the silver pocket watch out for Isabella to see. The silver metal was old and worn around the edges, engraved with the initials A.V. on the cover.
Isabella's hands began to shake violently. She reached out and snatched the watch from Mia's fingers, her breathing becoming shallow and quick.
Isabella: Where did you get this? This was my father's!
Mia: Press the small side button, Isabella. Open it.
Isabella pressed the small brass catch on top of the watch. The silver cover clicked open, revealing a black-and-white vintage photograph tucked behind the glass face.
Two tiny baby girls smiled together in the old picture, wrapped in matching white blankets. One of them wore a small silver bracelet marked with the name Isabella, and the other wore one marked Mia.
Isabella: No... that's impossible!
A sharp gasp escaped Isabella's lips as she stared down at the photograph. Her face turned completely pale, the rage in her eyes disappearing in an instant.
Isabella: My mother told me... she told me my twin sister died at birth!
Mia: She lied to you, Isabella. She lied to everyone in this room.
Isabella: This photo... it's real. It matches the one in my father's study!
Across the ballroom floor, an older woman in a gold embroidered gown pushed through the crowd of guests. Evelyn Vance, Isabella's mother, marched forward with an angry, frantic expression on her face.
Evelyn: Isabella! Step away from that girl right now!
Isabella: Mother? What is going on here?
Evelyn: Security! Remove this waitress from the hotel immediately!
Evelyn pointed a sharp, manicured finger at Mia, her voice trembling with panicked rage.
Evelyn: Where did you get that watch, you little thief?!
Mia: It belonged to my father, Evelyn! The father you stole from me!
Evelyn: You don't have a father in this house! You're just a common servant!
Mia: I am Arthur Vance's biological daughter!
The surrounding guests gasped loudly, murmurs spreading rapidly through the ballroom. Corporate directors and socialites leaned in closer, holding up their phones.
Guest A: Did she just say Arthur Vance's daughter?
Guest B: Arthur had a twin daughter? I thought she passed away twenty-eight years ago!
Evelyn: Don't listen to her lies! She bought that watch at a pawn shop!
Mia: I didn't buy anything from a shop, Evelyn. I was raised in a foster home three miles from your estate!
Isabella: Mother... look at her face. Look at her eyes.
Isabella looked back and forth between Mia and her own reflection in the decorative mirror on the wall. The resemblance was undeniable. They had the same dark eyes, the same nose, and the exact same birthmark near their collarbone.
Isabella: She looks just like me...
Evelyn: She doesn't look like you at all! She's an imposter trying to steal our family money!
Mia: I'm not here for your money, Evelyn. I'm here for the truth.
Mia reached into her apron pocket once again, pulling out a folded document stamped with an official red state seal. She unfolded the paper in front of the crowd, holding it high for everyone to see.
Mia: This is my official birth certificate from the state registry!
