The quiet afternoon sun streamed through the hallway windows of the suburban home, casting long shadows across the polished wooden floor. Eight-year-old Lily knelt quietly beside a locked white door at the far end of the corridor, her tiny hands trembling as she held a heavy white ceramic plate. Stacked neatly on the plate was a warm meal of scrambled eggs, steamed broccoli, and sliced meat. She leaned her small head against the cold wood, her voice barely above a breath as she pushed the plate under the narrow gap beneath the door frame.
Lily: Daddy, wait, please. I brought you food.
Lily: Please eat it before she sees me here.
From around the corner, Mark stepped into the hallway, his face twisting into wide-eyed fury as he saw his daughter kneeling on the floor. His teeth clenched so tightly his jaw ached, his mind reeling with confusion and rising anger as he watched her slide the dinner plate under the locked bedroom door.
Mark: Lily! What on earth are you doing down there?!
Lily: Daddy! I... I was just helping!
Mark: Who told you to slide food under that door?!
Before Lily could answer, heavy footsteps echoed rapidly down the wooden hallway. Sarah, Mark’s new wife of six months, came running around the corner in a green tank top and jeans, sweat glistening on her forehead, her eyes wide with total panic and terror.
Sarah: What's happening?! Mark, what are you doing back early from work?!
Mark: She's been putting food under this door, Sarah! What is going on in my house?!
Sarah: Wait, Mark, please! Don't go near that room!
Mark: Get out of my way! Tell me what's behind that door right now!
Sarah: I'm going to see what's in there, just let me explain first!
Mark: Explain?! You've been keeping secrets in my own home while I was at the office?!
Sarah: Please just listen to me first! It's not what you think, Mark!
Mark: Then tell me what's behind that door!
Mark dropped to his knees, pulling a small flashlight from his pocket and clicking it on. He jammed the key into the brass lock, turned it with a sharp click, and pushed the heavy white door open into the pitch-black room, unaware of the devastating truth waiting inside.
