The Gala of Greed and Whispers

Clara: "Keep your eyes on Lily, Mark. I don't trust anyone in this room."

Mark: "Understood, Clara. But why did you even come tonight? You knew Evelyn would cause trouble."

Clara: "Because my late husband built half of this empire. If I don't show up, Evelyn claims total control of the estate."

Mark: "The board members are already watching you two like hawks."

Clara: "Let them watch. The truth about the inheritance comes out tonight."

Clara smoothed down her dark plum dress, holding Lily's tiny hand as they walked into the main hall. The mansion's black-and-white marble floor gleamed beneath chandeliers that cost more than most family homes. Hundreds of wealthy investors, family lawyers, and Dallas elites filled the room, sipping champagne and whispering behind gold-leaf menus.

Guest 1: "Is that Thomas's widow? I heard she was cut out of the trust fund."

Guest 2: "Evelyn said she took millions from the family account after Thomas died."

Guest 1: "Look at her bringing that child here. It's embarrassing."

Clara: "Don't listen to them, Lily. Keep walking."

Lily: "Why are those people pointing at us, Mommy?"

Clara: "Because they don't know the truth, baby. Just stay close to me."

Evelyn stepped out from behind a massive marble pillar, holding a glass of bourbon. His grey three-piece suit was immaculate, and his eyes glinted with arrogant satisfaction as he approached Clara and her daughter.

Evelyn: "Well, well. The disgraced widow actually had the courage to show her face."

Clara: "This is my daughter's home, Evelyn. You don't intimidate me."

Evelyn: "It won't be her home for long. The board votes on the final estate transfer at nine o'clock."

Clara: "You mean the vote you rigged with fake financial reports?"

Evelyn: "Watch your mouth, Clara. Accusations like that could lose you custody of that little girl if the court decides you're unstable."

Clara: "Touch my daughter or her legal rights, and I will destroy you."

Evelyn: "You have no power here, Clara. Thomas is gone. You're just a nobody in an expensive dress."

Lily: "Uncle Evelyn, why are you being mean to Mommy?"

Evelyn: "Quiet, child. Adults are speaking."

Evelyn leaned down, pretending to offer a warm smile to the girl, but his eyes remained cold and calculated.

Evelyn: "Come here, Lily. Let me show you the big gold clock near the fireplace."

Clara: "Leave her alone, Evelyn."

Evelyn: "Oh, stop being paranoid, Clara. Grandmother Beatrice is watching us right now. Do you really want to make a scene in front of her?"

Clara glanced across the room. Grandmother Beatrice stood near the grand staircase, surrounded by senior estate attorneys. Her sharp grey eyes were fixed on Evelyn and Clara. Clara reluctantly loosened her grip on Lily's hand, stepping back just two feet.

Evelyn: "See? That wasn't so hard. Walk with your uncle, little girl."

Lily: "Okay... but I want to stay near Mommy."

Evelyn: "Of course you do. Just take my hand."

Evelyn took Lily's small hand, leading her across the polished floor. Clara watched every single step, her heart pounding with a deep, instinctual dread that something awful was about to happen.
