Doctor: "Mr. Vance? She's resting peacefully now."
Julian: "Doctor, how is she? How is our baby?"
Doctor: "Your wife suffered some mild bruising on her shoulders and jaw, along with elevated stress levels. But fortunately, the baby's heart rate has stabilized."
Julian: "Thank God... thank God..."
Doctor: "She will need strict bed rest for the next couple of weeks. No emotional stress, no exertion."
Julian: "She won't have any stress. I'll make sure of it."
Julian stepped quietly into the private hospital room. Clara lay on the bed, an IV line in her hand, looking soft and fragile against the white sheets.
Clara: "Julian?"
Julian: "I'm here, my love. The doctor says the baby is safe."
Clara: "I was so scared... when she pushed the glass into my mouth, I couldn't breathe..."
Julian: "I am so sorry, Clara. I should have seen how cruel she was being to you when I wasn't around."
Clara: "She kept telling me I was ruining your life... that you were going to lose your family's legacy because of me."
Julian: "Listen to me very carefully, Clara. You ARE my legacy. You and our child. Nothing else matters."
Clara: "What happened at the house after the ambulance left?"
Julian: "The police arrested her. She was booked into county jail for third-degree domestic assault and coercion."
Clara: "Did she... did she try to use her lawyers?"
Julian: "Her personal attorney called me thirty minutes ago trying to negotiate a settlement. He asked if we would drop the charges in exchange for a cash payout."
Clara: "What did you tell him?"
Julian: "I told him to go to hell. I told him we're taking this all the way to trial."
Clara: "Julian... what about the house? What about your career at the firm?"
Julian: "I resigned from the family firm this afternoon."
Clara: "You resigned?! But you worked so hard to become a partner!"
Julian: "My mother owns forty percent of that firm's shares, Clara. I will not work in a place where her money controls my life. I already accepted an offer at a private civil litigation practice across town."
Clara: "Oh, Julian..."
Julian: "It pays less, but it gives us total freedom. We're moving out of that mansion tomorrow."
Clara: "Where will we go?"
Julian: "I put a deposit on a quiet three-bedroom house near the park. It has a big backyard, oak trees, and no grand staircases or white marble floors."
Clara smiled through her tears, reaching up to touch his face.
Clara: "A real home."
Julian: "A real home. Just for us."
A knock came at the door, and Detective Roberts stepped inside carrying a manila folder.
Detective Roberts: "Mr. Vance? Mrs. Vance? I have an update on the audio recording from your phone."
Julian: "What did you find, Detective?"
Detective Roberts: "It's crystal clear. And it proves far more than simple assault."
